August 15th 1975 is a disgraceful day in the history of Bangladesh. On this day group of killers brutally assassinated the Father of the Nation’ Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and his five family members. The killers who fell in a barbarous party of killing spree were some rebel army personnel. The military and civil plotters were behind the curtain. They were the beneficiaries of the 15 August brutal massacre.

Bangladesh is observing the National Mourning Day marking the 45th anniversary of the brutal assasination of its founder President Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on 15th August 1975. The National Flag of Bangladesh is flying half mast at all government buildings to mark the tragic day in 1975. Special programmes are being arranged by television channels and various organisations to mark the occasion on 15th August.

Sheikh Mujibur Rahman is known as the ‘Father of the Nation’ of Bangladesh. He is often known as ‘Mujib’ or ‘Sheikh Mujib’, he is also known as the prime architect of the independent nation, Bangladesh. Mujib was voted the Greatest Bengali of all time in 2004 BBC poll.
In 1949 Mujib began his political career as a co-founder of the Awami League. The league advocated political autonomy for East Pakistan, then recently created eastern part of Pakistan.
In the 1970 general elections, the Bangla-based Awami League, led by Mujib won an overall majority, but the West Pakistani regime was reluctant to hand over power. On March 25th 1971, Pakistani armed forces were used to put an end to the growing unrest. With the help of India, East Pakistan defeated the Pakistani army. Bangladesh was renamed as East Pakistan and in January 1972 Mujib became the first prime minister of the country.
Mujib face as many problems in Bangladesh, and the situation of the country becomes worst, Mujib doesn’t give up, but he took tighter control of Bangladesh and assumed the presidency in January 1975.Mujib and most of his family members were killed by a small group of army officers during a military coup on August 15th 1975. One of his daughters, Sheikh Hasina Wazed, was in Germany at that time, so survived the killings and is the current prime minister of Bangladesh. So as a remembrance of this day every year on August 15th it is observed as National Mourning Day in Bangladesh. As a mark of honour, national flags will be lowered to half-staff at all government, semi-government and autonomous bodies, educational institutions, private buildings and Bangladesh missions abroad.
