Son of the religious reformer Debendranath Tagore, Rabindranath Tagore began his works in literature at a very young age. He began writing verses and short stories at a very young age. He wrote his first poem at the age of eight. He lost his mother at a very young age and he was raised by maids and servants. His father travelled widely.
As his father wanted him to become a barrister Tagore was enrolled at a public school in Brighton East Sussex, England in the year 1878. But he left Europe without completing his studies. He returned back to Bengal in the year 1880 with an aim to reconcile European novelty with Brahmo traditions by taking best from each. After returning to Bengal he spent his time by regularly publishing poems, novels and stories.
In 1883 he married ten year old Mrinalini. They had five children, two of whom died in childhood. In 1901 he moved to Santiniketan to found an ashram. It was there where his wife and two children passed away.

- Rabindranath Tagore was the first Indian to win Nobel Prize. He won Nobel Prize in Literature in the year 1913 for his best-known work in the poetry This made him the first non-European to win the Nobel Prize in Literature. Tagore was also Asia’s first Nobel laureate and the second non-European after Theodore Roosevelt to receive a Nobel Prize. Rabindranath Tagore is regarded as the greatest Indian poet of the 20th century and he is the most renowned modern Indian poet.
- Rabindranath Tagore was the founder of the prestigious Visva Bharati University.
- Rabindranath Tagore composed the National anthem of India and Bangladesh and s contributed to the National Anthem of Sri Lanka. He is the only person in the world to have penned the national anthem of more than one nation.
- In 1940, the University of Oxford in England conferred Tagore with an honorary doctorate for his numerous achievements, including those in the field of education.
- Rabindranath Tagore was crowned by the British with knight Title in the year 1915.
