Important Facts Regarding UPSC CSE Cut Off
The cut-off mark is the mark scored by the last candidate selected according to the vacancies reported. This is will decide whether the candidate is eligible to appear for the next level of the exam or have successfully secured themselves to the final merit list. The three-tier exam has cut off based on factor like:
- The difficulty level of the question paper
- Number of vacancies in the exam
- Number of applicants appeared in the exam

The UPSC preliminary cut off marks is based on General Studies I. The General Studies II or the CSAT paper is only qualifying in nature that is it does not account for the final merit list. In the General Studies II paper candidate requires to score at least 33% to be eligible for the Mains exam. There will be separate cut off scores for each stage:
- Prelims Cut off– Cut off marks on the basis of GS Paper-I only. GS Paper-II was of qualifying nature with 33% marks as per Rule-15 of Civil Services Examination, 2019.
- Mains Cut off – Subject to 10% marks in each of the seven competitive papers i.e. Essay, GS-I, GS-II, GS-III, GS-IV, Optional-I, and Optional-II.

Tie-Breaker Rules
UPSC has cleared a few things with regards to the selection of candidates based on cut off:
- If aggregate marks of candidates equal in the Civil Services Examination, a higher rank is allotted to that candidate who secures more marks in Compulsory Papers, and IAS Personality Test/ Interview put together.
- If they score equally in Compulsory Papers and also in the UPSC CSE personality tests put together, the then-candidate who is senior in age will be ranked higher.
- And, if all the facts listed above are the same, then the candidate who would have secured more marks in only Compulsory Papers will be allotted the higher rank
