1.Japanese architect Arata Isozaki wins Pritzker Prize, the highest honour
- Japanese architect Arata Isozaki, who integrated the East and West in his creative designs has been honoured with Pritzker Architecture Prize 2019.
- This prize was incorporated in 1979 and is said to be the highest international honour in the field of architecture.
- The prize was announced by the jury of the Hyatt Foundation.
2.Dr. Mahesh Sharma Inaugurates ‘Azaadi Ke Diwane’ Museum at Red Fort Complex in Delhi
- ‘Azaadi Ke Diwane’ museum was inaugurated by the Minister of State for Culture (Independent charge) and Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Mahesh Sharma at the Red Fort Complex in Delhi.
- It has been constructed by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) and is the fifth museum to be dedicated to freedom fighters.
- The museum incorporates the latest technology such as sensors in a state-of-art environment.
3.Gurugram became world’s most polluted city in 2018
- Gurugram in the National Capital Region (NCR) emerged as the most polluted region in the world in 2018 as per 2018 World Air Quality Report.
- As per the report, Delhi is the most polluted capital in the world. In the list of polluted cities, Delhi ranked 11th.
- Bangladesh became the most polluted country closely followed by Pakistan and India while Iceland, Finland, Australia, Estonia and Sweden were among the least polluted countries.
4.National Security Day: 4th March
- National Security Day also known as Rashtriya Suraksha Diwas was celebrated on 4th March to praise the work of security forces such as army officers, para-military, policemen and commandos.
- First National Security Day was celebrated in 1972 and 48th National Security Day was celebrated this year.
5.Anthem on ‘plastic-free India’ launched in seven languages by Environment Minister
- An anthem ”Plastic Waste-Free India’‘ which has been composed and produced by Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya Smriti Manch (PDUSM)– a non-profit organisation which works in the field of social and environmental issues was launched by Union Minister for Science & Technology, Earth Sciences and Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Harsh Vardhan.
- It has been launched in seven languages – Hindi, Marathi, Gujarati, Tamil, Telegu, Malyalam and Kannada.
6.International Women’s Day: 8 March
- International Women’s Day is being observed on 8 March across the world.
- NGOs and other organisations across the world observe the day on the 8th of March every year to highlight the achievements of women.
- The theme for this year’s women’s day is ‘Think Equal, Build Smart, Innovate for Change’.The purpose of the theme is to achieve gender equality by putting innovation by women and girls.
7.Soumya Swaminathan named Chief Scientist at WHO
- Soumya Swaminathan, a Deputy Director-General of the World Health Organisation has been named Chief Scientist of the WHO.
- As Deputy Director-General Programmes (DDP), she was one of the three DDGs assisting WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom.
- She was the first Indian to hold the post.
8.Government to roll out 12-edged Rs 20 coin
- The Finance Ministry announced in a gazette notification to roll out Rs 20 coin for the first time in the country.
- The new coin will be shaped like a “dodecagon” – a 12-edged polygon.
- The Rs 20 coin will have some similarities with the Rs 10 coin that is in circulation across the country.
- The new coin will be two-toned and have a diameter of 27 mm, similar to Rs 10 coin.
- The outer ring of Rs 20 coin will be 65 percent copper, 15 percent zinc and 20 per nickel, the inner disc will be 75 percent copper, 20 percent zinc and five percent nickel.
9. ‘Al Nagah 2019’, A bilateral joint exercise between India and Oman
- The third edition of the bilateral joint exercise between India and Oman, ‘Al Nagah 2019’ will begin from 12th March.
- It will be organsied at Jabel Al Akhdar Mountains in Oman. It will continue till 25th of March.
- In the exercise, both the armies will exchange expertise and experience in tactics, weapon handling and firing.
- India-Oman bilateral security ties have continued to develop since the beginning of India-Oman Joint Military Cooperation meetings in 2006.
10. ISRO launches ‘Yuva Vigyani Karyakram’ for school children
- Indian Space Research Organisation has launched “Yuva VIgyani Karyakram”, for the School Children to be studying in the ninth standard.
- ISRO Scientists will impart basic knowledge on Space Technology, Space Science and Space Applications to the young ones.
- “Catch them young” residential training programme will be of around two weeks duration during summer holidays
- It will have a proposal to select 3 students from each State and Union Territory, covering CBSE, ICSE and State syllabus.
