CAT Exam 2023 – Exam Pattern
In terms of time allocation, number of questions, and sections, the CAT exam has continued to follow a similar pattern since 2015, with the exception of the previous three years, which may be continued through 2023 as well:
- CAT is a 2-hour computer-delivered test; nevertheless, it is not an online exam.
- The exam will feature 66 questions, separated into three portions for VARC, DILR, and Quantitative Ability, much like previous year. 100 questions were previously separated into three sections.
- There will be at least 18 questions (out of a total of 66) without negative marking. There are MCQ and non-MCQ questions in the exam, and there is no negative marking for non-MCQs. A few MCQs are altered to no negative marking questions in the event that any non-MCQs get negative marking.
- Over 48 MCQ questions in the CAT will result in a penalty of 1/3 negative marking.
- In the CAT, there are more than 48 MCQ-style questions, which result in a 1/3 negative marking penalty.
- IIMs shortlist candidates for the final admission stage by requiring a minimum qualifying score in each of the three sections of the CAT exam between 70 and 90 percentiles.
- In addition to having a high exam score in each of the three areas, IIMs favor applicants with strong academic backgrounds and a variety of professional experiences.
The sectional order, number and kind of questions in each section, and whether or not a question carries a penalty for incorrect answers are all shown in the table below for the two-hour exam.
