The Kerala PSC KWA Draftsman Grade 1 (Electrical) Exam 2025 is scheduled to be held on December 3, 2025. The exam will be conducted online/OMR and will consist of 100 multiple-choice questions totaling 100 marks. Candidates will have 1 hour 30 minutes to complete the test. The question paper will be in English only, and each question carries 1 mark.
A 1/3 negative marking is applicable for each wrong answer, so careful answering is advised. The exam will cover topics from 10 detailed modules, including Electricity, Electronics, AC/DC Machines, Digital Systems, Microcontrollers, Communication, and Safety.

Module 1: Fundamentals of Electricity (10 Marks)
- Voltage, current, resistance, energy, power – definitions and units.
- Ohm’s law – statement, simple problems related to Ohm’s law, power, and energy.
- Resistance in series and parallel – simple problems.
- Kirchhoff’s laws – KCL and KVL.

Module 2: Semiconductor Diodes & Transistors (10 Marks)
- Semiconductors: Energy band diagram of conductors, insulators, semiconductors, intrinsic & extrinsic semiconductors, doping, P & N type, majority & minority carriers.
- PN Junction: Drift & diffusion current, depletion layer, potential barrier, forward & reverse bias, breakdown – Zener & avalanche.
- VI characteristics, static and dynamic resistance.
- Types of Diodes: Power, Zener, varactor, tunnel diode; DC load line analysis; Half-wave, Full-wave, Bridge rectifiers; Capacitor filter; Zener regulator circuits.
- Transistors: CB, CE, CC configurations; current relations; input & output characteristics; input & output resistance; current gain, voltage gain, leakage current.
- Transistor biasing techniques, DC load line, fixing operating point, stabilization, single-stage CE amplifier.
- FET & MOSFET: JFET (P & N channel), comparison with BJT, parameters; MOSFET types – depletion & enhancement.
- Power Electronics: UJT, SCR, DIAC, TRIAC, inverter operation, DC motor drives, LVDT, induction & dielectric heating, integrated circuits (SMD).
- Power Supply: Voltage regulation – line & load regulation, shunt & series regulators, fixed & variable power supplies, protection circuits, SMPS, UPS (online & offline).
Module 3: Fundamentals of AC Systems (10 Marks)
- Generation of AC voltage, voltage equation, basic terms – amplitude, frequency, cycle, time period, average, instantaneous, RMS, form factor, peak factor.
- AC through resistance, inductance, and capacitance.
- Star and delta connections in 3-phase AC systems, line & phase relationships.
- Safety, First Aid, Batteries & Solar Cells: Basic safety, avoiding electric shock, first aid, battery installation & maintenance, solar cell setup, calculation of total number of cells for given power.
Module 4: Operational Amplifiers (10 Marks)
- Differential amplifier, op-amp parameters – virtual ground, input offset voltage/current, bias current, output offset voltage, CMRR, slew rate.
- Ideal & practical op-amp characteristics.
- Applications: Inverting/non-inverting amplifiers, voltage follower, comparator, difference & summing amplifier, integrators, differentiators, zero crossing detector, Schmitt trigger, window detector, logarithmic & antilog amplifier, instrumentation amplifier.
- DAC & ADC: R-2R ladder DAC, counter type, dual slope integration, successive approximation ADC, Flash ADC.
- Half-wave & full-wave precision rectifiers, active filters (LPF, HPF, BPF), RC phase shift & Wien bridge oscillators, astable & monostable multivibrators, triangular wave generator.
- PLL principle – operation, lock & capture range, applications, VCO.
- IC 555 timer – working, monostable & astable multivibrators.

- Semiconductor memory: ROM, RAM, static & dynamic RAM, Flash ROM, NVRAM, SDRAM, EDO RAM, optical & magnetic bubble memory.
Module 7: DC & AC Machines (10 Marks)
- DC Machines: Generators – construction, working, types, EMF equation, wave & lap windings, characteristics, simple problems. Motors – construction, working, types, torque, EMF equation, starters, speed control, testing, MG set.
- AC Machines: Transformers – construction, principle, types, EMF equation, transformation ratio, losses, efficiency, all-day efficiency, simple problems.
- Three-phase induction motors – principle, construction, types, slip, torque, losses, efficiency, power stages, speed control, starters.
- Alternators – construction, principle, EMF equation, losses, efficiency.
- Three-phase synchronous motor. Single-phase & FHP motors, universal motor, AC series motor, servomotor, stepper motor, split-phase motor.
Module 8: Television & Communication Systems (10 Marks)
- Television: Luminance, chrominance, additive & subtractive mixing of colors, color TV camera, Delta gun, Trinitron picture tubes. NTSC, SECAM, PAL systems – advantages/disadvantages. PAL-D decoder, frequency interleaving, PAL-D color TV receiver, AFT, color encoder/killer, HDTV, digital TV.
- Satellite TV: Antenna, LNA, LNB, FEC, digital satellite receiver. CCTV, MATV, CATV. Video recording: VHS, U-matic, VCD, DVD, MPEG.
- Communication Systems: EM waves, propagation, modulation (AM, FM, PM), detection, superheterodyne receiver, bandwidth, PAM, PCM, ASK, FSK, BPSK, QPSK, Offset PSK, BFSK, MSK.
