HISTORY
Madras Christian College has its roots in a tiny school for boys which was set up back in 1835 by two chaplains from the Church of Scotland. That school in turn evolved into The General Assembly’s School under the guidance of missionary Rev. John Anderson, and with the leadership of educationalist Dr. William Miller , it began to grow into the first class college it is today.
The college has been in the heart of Chennai for over 100 years, but way back in 1937 it moved to its present 365-acre campus in Tambaram. Buildings were designed by Swiss architect Henry Schaetti while Prof. Edward Barnes and his wife personally planted the trees that make the campus one of the most gorgeous places to study in India.
MCC basically hosted the Tambaram Conference in 1938 (that was the third World Missionary Conference) and that literally led to the formation of the World Council of Churches. This adds yet another layer of importance to the college’s already strong reputation as a place of academic as well as cultural significance.
