11 May is celebrated as National Technology Day to commemorate the testing of the Shakti-I nuclear missile. This was considered a great advancement in India’s technology and was hence established as National Technology Day. This day also marks the flight of Hansa-3, First indigenous aircraft of India. The aircraft was developed by National aerospace industries.

National Technology Day History

In 1999, the people of India expressed their gratitude by declaring May 11 as National Technology Day, following their significant achievements in the sector on that day the year before.
Under Operation Shakti, the government successfully conducted three nuclear tests on May 11, 1998 at the Indian Army’s Pokhran Test Range. On May 13, under the leadership of late President Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, India conducted two further nuclear tests, thus establishing India as a member of the privileged club of nuclear power nations.
However, India’s Defence Research and Development Organization did not stop there. They also tested their first indigenous aircraft, the Hansa-3, and successfully test fired the Trishul missile on the same day.
On May 11, 1999, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, the Prime Minister at the time, declared May 11 to be a day of major achievement for the country, and National Technology Day was marked for the first time. Since then, the Technology Development Board has recognized scientists and engineers for technological breakthroughs that have aided India’s development.

National Technology Day Celebration
National technology day is celebrated every year by the Technology Development Board of India (a statutory body) by awarding National Award to individuals for their contribution to science and technology in India. President of India, Shri Ram Nath Kovind focused on the common attributes of the technologies awarded. “First, they offer solutions that are necessary for the Indian context and contribute to the social and economic needs of our people. Second, they achieve all this at competitive prices. Third, that they don’t compromise on the quality,” he said.
The focus this year was ‘Commercialising Indigenous Technologies: Journey from Bench-side to Business Programme’ and dignitaries suggested ways to take this forward.
