The Preliminary Exam is the first step in the Selection Process, followed by the Application Process. ​The Prelims will be held offline and will consist of two papers: Paper I and Paper II. Candidates whose names appear on the Prelims cut-off list will be eligible for the Mains Exam after the Prelims Result is announced.

The Mains Exam will then consist of six papers with a qualifying score of 1400 marks, allowing candidates to sit for the UPSC Personality Test or Interview Round. The UPSC IFS Selection Process has reached its final round or stage. The combined marks from the Mains and the Interview round will constitute the Selection Process’s Final Result.
