History of World Earth Day
1: Who was the first woman President of India?
Gaylord Nelson, The US senator elected in the year 1962 was inspired by the Vietnam War or the “teach ins” that was taking place on college campuses around the United States. In the year 1969 Senator Gaylord Nelson who was also an environmental activist developed the idea of earth day and announced the earth day concept at a conference in Seattle.
Nelson began working towards the earth day event from his office by arranging two organizers for the event. Denis Hayes a young activist and a student president from Stanford University was selected as earth day’s national coordinator.
On the first Earth day April 22, 1970 rallies were held in Philadelphia, Chicago, Los Angeles and many other American cities. The first earth day was successful in creating awareness on environmental issues and transforming the public attitude.
Earth day was originated in the United States in 1970 but it became nationwide by 1990 and was celebrated in 141 nations under the leadership of Dennis Hayes. Earth day was renamed officially by the United Nations as International Mother Earth day in the year 2009
