Global Family Day 2020
Traditionally on January 01, we make New Year Resolutions such as quit smoking, healthy lifestyle, wake up early, quit drinking etc. Similarly, to promote love and peace, Global Family Day came into existence. It is an annual observance which aims at promoting the idea that the Earth is one Global family (Vasudeva Kudumbakam) and we should live in peace and harmony. Global Family Day grew out of the UN’s Millennium celebration, “One Day In Peace”.
Don’t confuse it with the International Family Day, which is observes on May 15. International Family Day was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in 1993. Organisations and government institutions use this day as an opportunity to promote awareness of issues relating to families and to increase knowledge of the social, economic and demographic processes affecting families.

History of Global Family Day
In November 1997, the UN General Assembly made a declaration that the first year of the new millennium (2000) should see the launch of an International Decade for the Culture of Peace and non-violence for the Children of the World and that the decade should be announced as “One Day of Peace”. In 1999 a formal invitation to participate was sent to all UN member states. The UN established this Observance as an annual event from 2001 onwards. People are encouraged to celebrate this day by sharing meals and by donating to organizations that serve poor people. Along with the Global Family Day, January 01 is also observed as the World Peace Day.
