Following a tense standoff, these officers made the ultimate sacrifice, and their legacy lives on.
National Police Commemoration Day serves not only to honor their memory but also to pay tribute to all police personnel who have laid down their lives in the line of duty. As we approach October 21, 2024, let us reflect on the courage of these individuals and stand in solidarity with their families, ensuring that their sacrifices are never forgotten
History of Police Commemoration Day 2024 in India
Police Commemoration Day serves as a solemn tribute to the brave soldiers who lost their lives in the Indo-China border conflict in Ladakh. The events leading to this remembrance began on October 20, 1959, when the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) was tasked with patrolling the 2,600-mile border between India and Tibet. Three units from the CRPF’s 3rd Battalion were deployed on separate patrols in the Hot Springs area of North Eastern Ladakh. Unfortunately, one contingent, comprising two police constables and a porter, went missing.
On October 21, a new team, led by Deputy Commandant Karam Singh, was dispatched to search for the missing patrol. As they approached a hillock, they encountered hostile fire from the Chinese Army. Tragically, ten Indian police officers were killed in this confrontation, and seven others were taken prisoner. Nearly a month later, on November 28, 1959, the bodies of the fallen officers were returned to India.
In January 1960, a resolution was passed at the Annual Conference of Inspectors General of Police, officially designating October 21 as Police Commemoration Day, or Martyr’s Day. Since 2012, this day has been marked by a parade at the Police Memorial in Chanakyapuri, Delhi, honoring the courage and sacrifice of those who have served and continue to serve. As we reflect on this day in 2024, let us remember the valiant efforts of these officers and pay our respects to their enduring legacy.
