CTET 2026 Eligibility Criteria

CTET has two papers.

• Paper 1: Teachers of Classes 1 to 5 (Primary Stage)
• Paper 2: Teachers of Classes 6 to 8 (Elementary Stage)

Engineering Graduates and CTET Paper 2

For Paper 2, a B.Tech graduate must have at least 50% marks in their degree and must have completed a 1-year B.Ed programme. The same source adds that a B.Tech degree with 45% is also acceptable if the B.Ed was done under NCTE norms.

B.E/B.Tech (minimum 50%, or 45% under the NCTE 2002 relaxation) + B.Ed (passed or appearing) = Eligible for CTET Paper 2

Engineering Graduates and CTET Paper 1

This is where sources differ. Some sites list graduation with 50% plus a B.Ed as valid for Paper 1, while others say B.Ed candidates cannot apply for Paper 1 and that the standard route is 12th with 50% plus a 2-year D.El.Ed. Because of this conflict, read the current CTET bulletin on ctet.nic.in before applying for Paper 1. For engineers, the secure route is Paper 2.

Can Engineers Do a B.Ed?

Yes. Engineering graduates can pursue a B.Ed. NCTE relaxed its norms in 2014, allowing engineers to enrol, particularly in Mathematics and Science, and the minimum marks suggested are 55% in the Engineering course. Individual universities may set their own cut-offs and entrance tests, so check the admission notice of the college you choose. Make sure the college and course are NCTE-recognised, because an unrecognised B.Ed makes you ineligible.

Step-by-Step Roadmap: B.Tech to CTET Qualified Teacher

1. Complete B.E/B.Tech with at least 50% (or 45% under the applicable norms).
2. Join an NCTE-recognised B.Ed programme, preferably with the Mathematics/Science method.
3. Apply for CTET Paper 2 once you are in the final year or have passed the B.Ed. CBSE allows candidates who are appearing in the final year to apply.
4. Understand the exam pattern. Paper 2 has Child Development and Pedagogy, Language I, Language II and either Mathematics and Science or Social Studies.
5. Score the qualifying mark. For General candidates it is 60% (90/150), with relaxation for reserved categories.
6. Use your certificate. The CTET certificate is valid for life, and you can then apply for KVS, NVS, central and state teaching vacancies and many private schools.
