Introduction to Inequality Based Questions

In these questions, you will be provided with a statement consisting of a group of elements. These elements will be having a certain coded relationship among them which is denoted by different inequality symbols like >, <, = etc.

You should know the meaning of different symbols which will help you in finding the relationship between the different elements of a statement.

Symbols and their Meanings

A > B means A is Greater than B.

A < B means A is Smaller than B

A = B means A is Equals to B.

A ≠ B means A is either greater than or smaller than B

A ≥ B means A is Greater than or Equals to B

A ≤ B means A is Smaller than or Equals to B

Statements and their Conclusions

If the statements are any of these P>Q>R, P>Q≥R, P≥Q>R, P=Q>R, P>Q=R, then the conclusion is P>R.

If the statements are any of these P<Q<R, P<R, P<Q≤R, P≤Q<R, P=Q<R, P<Q=R, then the conclusion is P<R.

If the statements are any of these P≥Q≥R, P=Q≥R, P≥Q=R, then the conclusion is P>R or P=R.

If the statements are any of these P≤Q≤R, P=Q≤R, P≤Q=R, then the conclusion is P<R or P=R.

If the statements are any of these P<Q>R, P≤Q>R, P<Q≥R, P>Q<R, P>Q≤R, P≥Q<R, then no conclusion can be inferred.

Types of Questions asked

Inequality based questions are provided in two types:

Direct Inequality in which direct symbols will be given in the statement.

Coded Inequality in which coded symbols (e.g. @, %, $, etc.) will be given and what they signify will be provided separately (e.g. @ means >, % means <, etc.)

Both kinds of questions can be solved easily once you have gone through the above statements and their conclusions.

Tricks to solve Problems Easily

You should keep in mind the priority order while solving these type questions, they are:

Priority 1: < or >, Priority 2: ≥ or ≤ and Priority 3: =.

Trick 1: Whenever in a statement you get both the priority 1 in opposite order (A>B<C) there will be a conflict and thus no conclusion.

If A > B < C, then A < C = False & C > A = False.

But, If A > B >C then A > C = True, C < A = True

Essentially, whenever these two sign come in opposite directions, the answer will be false.

Trick 2: Whenever in a statement you get both the priority 2 in opposite order (A≥ B ≤C) there will be a conflict and thus no conclusion.

If A ≥ B ≤ C, then A ≤ C = False & C   ≥ A = False.

But, If A ≥ B ≥ C, then A ≥ C = True, C ≤ A = True.

Trick 3: When it occurs to you that the statement of order is opposite just change the sign in the alternate direction

Conclusion

These were some tricks to solve problems related to inequality in Reasoning for any Bank Exam. But, it isn’t sufficient to only know the tricks. The key to mastering it is Practice. Practice makes Perfect, the saying holds true even here. If you find it hard to find a source to get practice questions on virtually any section in the exam, then look no further, the Entri App provides a plethora of Problems to solve.
