SBI PO Vacancy 2026 – Category Wise Details

The State Bank of India has announced 1,500 vacancies for the post of Probationary Officer (PO) through Advertisement No. CRPD/PO/2026-27/09. The selected candidates will be appointed as Probationary Officers in Junior Management Grade Scale-I (JMGS-I) and may be posted anywhere in India based on the bank’s requirements. SBI also reserves the right to transfer selected officers to any circle, office, associate, subsidiary, or other organization as per administrative needs.

1500 Vacancies — Nearly 3x Jump from Last Year

This is the biggest vacancy jump in recent SBI PO history. Last year’s intake of 541 has shot up to 1500 — that’s +959 seats, a 177% increase.

SBI PO 2026 Eligibility Criteria – Age, Qualification, Number of Attempts 

Before applying for the SBI PO 2026 exam, candidates must carefully check the eligibility conditions prescribed by the State Bank of India. The eligibility criteria mainly include educational qualification, age limit, nationality, and number of attempts. Candidates who fail to meet any of these requirements at any stage of the recruitment process may have their candidature cancelled.

SBI PO 2026 Educational Qualification

Candidates must possess a Bachelor’s Degree in any discipline from a recognized university or an equivalent qualification recognized by the Central Government. Final-year or final-semester students can also apply provisionally, provided they produce proof of graduation on or before the date specified by SBI during the recruitment process. Professional qualifications such as Engineering, Medical, Chartered Accountancy, and Integrated Dual Degree courses are also accepted.

SBI PO 2026 Age Limit

To apply for SBI PO 2026, candidates must be between 21 and 30 years of age as per the cut-off date mentioned in the official notification. This means applicants should not be below 21 years and should not have crossed 30 years of age on the specified date. Age relaxation is available for reserved categories according to Government of India guidelines.

A candidate must be:

• A citizen of India, or
• A subject of Nepal or Bhutan, or
• A Tibetan refugee who came to India before January 1, 1962 with the intention of permanent settlement, or

Candidates belonging to categories other than Indian citizens must possess the necessary eligibility certificate issued by the Government of India.

SBI has prescribed a limit on the number of attempts for the Probationary Officer examination. Only appearances in the Main Examination are counted as attempts. Appearing in the Preliminary Examination alone is not counted as an attempt.

Yes. SBI has increased the maximum number of attempts for several categories. The attempt limit for UR/EWS candidates has increased from 4 to 6, while OBC and eligible PwBD candidates now get 9 attempts instead of 7. only appearing in the Main Exam counts as an attempt — Prelims does not. So if you’d maxed out your old UR limit of 4, you’re back in the game with 2 fresh shots.

SBI PO 2026 – CIBIL and Credit History Requirement

Candidates should ensure that they do not have any unresolved loan defaults or adverse credit history. Applicants whose records show loan repayment defaults with banks, NBFCs, or other financial institutions must clear such dues before joining SBI. Failure to regularize outstanding liabilities may result in cancellation of the appointment offer.

Big change this year: the descriptive paper has dropped from 50 marks (2025) to 30 marks (2026) — a 20-mark cut. It now covers:

• Email writing — 1 out of 2 options (compulsory)
• Situation Analysis — 1 out of 2 options (compulsory)
• Report Writing OR Précis Writing — pick one (optional)

Mains Grand Total: 230 marks in 3 hours 30 minutes (down from 250 in 2025). With less weight on writing, your aptitude scores in the objective sections matter more than ever for candidates who find writing tougher.

Negative marking: 1/4th mark deducted per wrong answer in both Prelims and Mains. No penalty for un-attempted questions.

SBI PO 2026 Phase III: Psychometric Test + Group Exercise + Interview

A Psychometric Test (personality profiling) is also conducted, with results shared with the interview panel — all questions in this test are mandatory.

SBI PO Salary 2026 – Latest & Previous

The SBI PO salary package has been revised upward in 2026. The approximate annual CTC at the Mumbai centre has increased from ₹20.43 lakh in 2025 to ₹21.97 lakh in 2026, reflecting a rise of ₹1.54 lakh per year.

That’s ₹1.54 lacs more per year. Starting basic pay remains ₹48,480 + 4 advance increments (scale: 48480-2000/7-62480-2340/2-67160-2680/7-85920, Junior Management Grade Scale-I), but revised allowances (DA, HRA, CCA, PF, NPS, LFC, medical, lease rental, etc.) have pushed the total package up.

Apart from the higher salary package, SBI POs are entitled to several benefits, including Dearness Allowance (DA), House Rent Allowance (HRA), City Compensatory Allowance (CCA), medical benefits, leave fare concession, pension-related benefits, and career advancement opportunities.

SBI PO 2026 Bond, Probation & Career Path

• Selected candidates must complete an online basic banking course before joining.
• A ₹2 lakh service bond for a minimum 3-year tenure is mandatory at joining (invoked if you resign early).
• You’ll be designated “Probationary Officer” with a 2-year probation period, subject to continuous assessment before confirmation in JMGS-I.
