Other papers (Chemical, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Statistics, Life Sciences, Humanities, Architecture, Geology, Mining, Petroleum and more)
For every other paper, follow this approach:
- Open the revised syllabus for your paper in Appendix D of the brochure.
- Mark Core Topics and Special Topics.
- Choose one standard university-level textbook per subject that covers those topics.
- Add a topic-wise question bank and previous year papers of your paper.
Step 5: Free Video Lectures
- NPTEL offers free lecture series for most core engineering subjects taught at IITs and IISc. They are widely used for GATE preparation. Choose courses that match your revised syllabus.
- Use video lectures to understand topics, then solve questions yourself. Do not only watch.
Step 6: Notes, Formula Sheets and Revision Material
- Make your own short notes for each subject while studying. Writing in your own words fixes concepts better than copying.
- Keep a formula sheet for Engineering Mathematics and each core subject.
- Maintain an error log of mistakes from tests and revise it weekly.
- Make one-page summaries of Core Topics for the last two weeks.
- Use ready-made notes only to fill gaps, not as your only source.
Step 7: Previous Year Question Papers (2007 to 2026)
Previous year papers are the most useful practice material.
- Download them from the Downloads tab of the official GATE 2027 website.
- Solve topic-wise first, so you learn the question style and which topics carry more questions.
- Then solve full papers in 3 hours with the on-screen calculator.
- Check how questions on Core Topics repeat. At least 90% of the paper comes from Core Topics.
- Be careful with the revised syllabus. Some topics in old papers may have changed.

Step 8: GATE 2027 Mock Tests and Test Series
- Use the official mock test links on the GATE website to learn the interface.
- Add a full-length test series for your paper. Take at least 10 to 15 tests before the exam.
- Take each test in exam timing: 3 hours, 65 questions, 100 marks.
- Practise all three question types: MCQ (with negative marking), MSQ and NAT.
- Spend as much time on analysis as on the test itself
Step 9: How to Use Your GATE 2027 Study Material
- Finish one source completely before you start another.
- Check that every resource follows the revised GATE 2027 syllabus.
- Keep one set of notes and one set of questions per subject. Do not over-collect.
- Use only the on-screen calculator when practising numerical questions.
- Download only from trusted sources. GATE offices never sell question papers or syllabus, so ignore messages that claim otherwise.
| Stage | What to use |
|---|---|
| Planning | Revised syllabus and brochure |
| Concept building | One standard textbook and NPTEL or video lectures |
| Practice | Topic-wise question bank and previous year papers |
| Revision | Short notes, formula sheets and error log |
