Check PYQs Against the Revised GATE 2027 Syllabus
The brochure states that the syllabus of most test papers has been revised for GATE 2027. So before you solve any old question:
- Open the latest syllabus of your paper.
- Mark the topics that are removed, added or changed.
- Solve all questions on current topics. For topics no longer in the syllabus, skip them.
- Keep a separate list of questions on new topics. Since old papers will have few or no questions on them, practise from books and mock tests.
How to Solve GATE 2027 Previous Year Papers: Step-by-Step Method
Step 1: Topic-wise solving first
Start with the PYQs topic by topic, soon after you finish a topic. This builds concepts and shows how questions are asked. Solve all available years for each topic where the topic is still in the syllabus.
Step 2: Full papers under exam conditions
After one full revision, solve full papers in 3 hours with the on-screen calculator and no phone. Start with the last 5 to 10 years of your paper, then older ones if time permits.
Step 3: Analyse every paper
Use a PYQ analysis sheet (template below). Check score, accuracy, time per section, and the reason for every lost mark.
Step 4: Re-attempt wrong questions
Re-attempt your wrong and skipped questions after 7 days. Add them to your error log.
Step 5: Repeat for weak topics
If a topic keeps losing marks, go back to the book or lecture and then solve PYQs on it again.
Tips to Get the Most From GATE 2027 PYQs
- Time yourself. Always keep the 3-hour limit for full papers.
- Use the virtual calculator. It is the only calculator allowed in the exam.
- Do not just read solutions. Try each question first, even if you are not sure.
- Learn the language of questions. GATE often tests concepts with small twists.
- Practise MSQ carefully. Marks come only if you select exactly the correct set of options.
- For NAT, check decimal places and round off only at the last step.
- Avoid blind guessing in MCQs. Guess only after removing at least one option.
- Note repeated concepts. If a concept appears in many years, learn it thoroughly.
- Mix with mock tests. PYQs show the past. Mock tests prepare you for new question styles.
