How is the GATE Score Calculated?
The GATE score is not simply your marks multiplied by ten. It is calculated from your marks using a formula printed on the scorecard itself. In the formula given on recent scorecards:
GATE Score = Sq + (St − Sq) × (M − Mq) / (Mt − Mq)
where:
- M is the marks obtained by you in the paper (for papers held in more than one session, the normalised marks are used)
- Mq is the qualifying marks for the General category in that paper
- Mt is the mean of the marks of the top 0.1 percent or top 10 candidates in the paper, whichever is larger (including all sessions in multi-session papers)
- Sq = 350, the score assigned to Mq
- St = 900, the score assigned to Mt
