Many aspirants ask two things: what is the selection process in GATE and what are the GATE 2027 qualifying marks? The short answer is that GATE does not select candidates for a job or a seat by itself. It gives you a GATE score, and institutes and recruiting organizations use that score for admission or shortlisting. This blog explains every step, from the exam to the result, with the official formulas from the GATE 2027 brochure.

GATE 2027 Qualifying Marks: Official Formula
Qualifying marks are decided after the exam for each test paper. They are not fixed in advance.
General category qualifying marks = max(25, min(40, μ + σ))
where μ is the mean and σ is the standard deviation of the marks of all candidates who appeared in that paper.
This means:
- The General qualifying mark can never be below 25 or above 40 (out of 100).
- If μ + σ is lower than 25, the qualifying mark is 25.
- If μ + σ is higher than 40, the qualifying mark is 40.
- Otherwise it equals μ + σ.
Category-wise GATE 2027 qualifying marks
| Category | Qualifying marks |
|---|---|
| General | max(25, min(40, μ + σ)) |
| OBC-NCL / EWS | 9/10 × General qualifying marks |
| SC / ST / PwD | 2/3 × General qualifying marks |
Example (only to show the calculation): if the General qualifying mark of a paper is 30, then OBC-NCL/EWS = 27 and SC/ST/PwD = 20. Education portals have reported exactly these figures (30, 27 and 20) for the GATE 2026 Computer Science paper, and a General range of about 25 to 30 across papers in recent years. Official GATE 2027 figures will be published with the result.
GATE 2027 Qualifying Marks vs Cutoff for Admission
| Term | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Qualifying marks | The minimum mark needed to get a valid GATE score and scorecard |
| Admission or PSU cutoff | The score or rank an institute or PSU sets for shortlisting. It is set by that organization and is usually much higher than the qualifying mark |
Qualifying GATE does not guarantee admission, a scholarship or a job.
GATE 2027 Qualifying Marks – Score Calculation (Official Formula)
Your GATE score is calculated from your marks using this formula:
GATE Score = Sₐ + (Sₜ − Sₐ) × (M − Mₐ) / (Mₜ − Mₐ)
where:
- M = marks obtained by you (actual marks for single-session papers, normalized marks for multi-session papers)
- Mₐ = qualifying marks for the General category in that paper
- Mₜ = mean of marks of the top 0.1% of candidates, or the top 10 candidates, whichever is larger (all sessions included for multi-session papers)
- Sₐ = 350, the score given to the qualifying mark
- Sₜ = 900, the score given to the mean of the top candidates
Illustration (numbers are assumed, not official): let Mₐ = 30 and Mₜ = 80. A candidate who scores M = 50 gets 350 + (900 − 350) × (50 − 30) / (80 − 30) = 350 + 550 × 0.4 = 570.
The score is out of 1000. A candidate at the General qualifying mark gets 350.
Normalization for Multi-Session Papers – GATE 2027 Qualifying Marks
Some GATE 2027 papers may be held in more than one session. A candidate appears in only one session, decided by the Admit Card. To account for differences in difficulty between sessions, marks are normalized.
Normalized marks (jth candidate, ith session) = [(Mₜᵍ − Mₐᵍ) / (Mₜⁱ − Mₐⁱ)] × (Mᵢⱼ − Mₐⁱ) + Mₐᵍ
where:
- Mᵢⱼ = actual marks of the candidate in that session
- Mₜᵍ = average marks of the top 0.1% of candidates across all sessions
- Mₐᵍ = sum of the mean and standard deviation of marks across all sessions
- Mₜⁱ = average marks of the top 0.1% of candidates in that session
- Mₐⁱ = sum of the mean and standard deviation of marks in that session
The basis is that the ability distribution of candidates is the same across sessions, since the number of candidates is large and session allocation is random. Normalized marks (for multi-session papers) or raw marks (for single-session papers) are then used to compute the GATE score.
