The Promotion from Clerk to PO
After six years of service, a clerk can become JMGS – 1 officer, after clearing a written test and interview.
Staff of banks are divided into Clerical Cadre and Officer Cadre. They are directly recruited via exams and interviews. A clerk cannot be internally recruited as a Probationary Officer as POs are directly recruited. However, clerks can shift to the officer cadre as Trainee Officers(TOs) or Junior Management Grade Officer Scale – 1 (JMGS – 1)
The Promotion/shift is possible through three means:
1. Internal Examination:
PSBs (Public Sector Banks) conduct an internal exam every 2 years for employees wanting to make a shift to the officer cadre. A clerk becomes eligible after:
- 3 years of service, along with the completion of the CAIIB (Certified association of the Indian Institute of Bankers) exam
- 4 years of service, along with the completion of JAIIB (Junior association of the Indian Institute of Bankers) exam
- Minimum 6 years of service
The perks and salary received by a trainee officer are equivalent to that of a PO. Once the clerk is promoted, he/she will be put in a probationary period of 2 years and then will be promoted to MMGS-II or back to the Clerical Cadre based on performance.
2. OJM Internal Exam:
This is another internal exam (written test and interview) for employees to make a shift to the officer’s cadre. However, to be eligible for the OJM, a clerk should have minimum 6 years of service as a clerk under the fast track promotion channel or 12 years of service under the normal promotion channel. The perks are equivalent to that od PO but the salary is relatively lesser
3. Direct Recruitment:
If you want to become a PO, you can appear in the exam conducted by the State Bank of India and get directly recruited as a Probationary Officer through the regular selection process.
It’s not a very difficult procedure it’s just very time consuming and requires a lot of patience. Years of patience, quite literally. Guess you could just directly go ace the SBI PO exam.
