Here are some important tips to be considered while preparing for securing high ranks in the toughest exam conducted by Kerala PSC
The Main stage of the Civil Service Examination conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) is likely to be the model for KAS as well. However, it wouldn’t be as difficult as the UPSC exam. For UPSC Mains, the candidates have to attempt 9 papers including the optional subject. As per the KAS scheme, there are just 3 papers that carry 100 marks each. The candidates would get 2 hours for each paper. Though the questions would be in English, the candidates can write the answers in both English and Malayalam.
Writing practice
Having in-depth knowledge about a subject is not enough; you should also have the skill to explain it on the answer sheet in the most convincing way. The person who values your answer sheet should be able to grab the idea with clarity. So, it is important to practice to hone your writing skills. Practice every day for the Mains exam after the Prelims are over. Divide your time and try to finish the answers within the time limit. Note the writing style while reading the newspaper. An answer should have an introduction, the body of the answer, or the explanation, and a good conclusion. It is better to avoid unnecessary jargons that would make it difficult for the person who values the answer sheet. Approaching the topic in a direct and straight forward manner is better than bluffing for the sake of the number of words. Ensure there are no grammatical and spelling mistakes in your descriptive answers.
Go through other state-level administrative exams
Though Kerala is conducting state level exams for the 1st time, we can refer the previous year question papers of other states like Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, etc., to get an idea about the question paper pattern. Say, each section comprises ten questions with a time limit of 2 hours i.e each question gets 12 mins. Keep this in mind while preparing. This might vary, and be ready to adapt with any pattern of questions asked. Many people assume that KAS might follow the Rajasthan model of question paper in which we can expect questions with 2, 5, and 10 marks respectively.
Short Tips
Along with the writing practice, be thorough with your syllabus. Understand the overlapping syllabus and give more time to learn them. While writing, rather than beating around the bush, be to the point. Keep in mind the mark that question fetches you and decide on whether to include an analytical approach in it.
Current affairs
This is indeed a very important portion of our exam. Ensure you go through current affairs until at least one month prior to the exam date. Since the paper is set almost 1-2 months before, it’s important to consider the major events that happened till then, and obviously you need to consider it’s follow up till the present dates. Divide the vast syllabus and make notes to make sure it gets into your head.
