A good GATE score opens the door to M.Tech and PhD programmes at the best technical institutes in the country, and even a few universities abroad. But which colleges actually accept GATE, and which one can you expect with your score? In this blog, we give you the list of colleges that accept GATE score, the top GATE colleges in India, the list of colleges in Kerala accepting GATE based on 2027 ranking, a guide to GATE score wise college list and GATE rank vs college for CSE, and the universities outside India that accept GATE score.
Why GATE Score Matters for Admission
GATE scores are used for admission to postgraduate programmes (M.Tech, M.E., M.Arch, MS by research) and PhD in IITs, IISc, NITs, IIITs and many other institutes. Candidates who join M.Tech through GATE in many Ministry of Education (MoE) supported institutes are also eligible for a monthly scholarship or assistantship as per the norms, subject to the institute’s rules.
GATE 2027 is organised by IIT Madras on February 6, 7, 13, 14, 20 and 21, 2027, and the score remains valid for three years from the date of result announcement.
List of Colleges That Accept GATE Score in India

Top GATE Colleges in India
When students search for top GATE colleges in India, they usually mean the institutes that rank highest in national rankings such as the NIRF and have strong research and placement records. The most sought-after are:
- IITs, especially IIT Madras, IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Kanpur, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Roorkee and IIT Guwahati
- IISc Bengaluru
- Top NITs, such as NIT Tiruchirappalli, NIT Karnataka (Surathkal), NIT Warangal and NIT Calicut
- IIT Hyderabad and other newer IITs
- Leading IIITs and universities such as IIIT Hyderabad and Jadavpur University
NIRF positions change every year, so check the latest NIRF engineering ranking before you finalise your list instead of relying on an older year’s rank.
GATE Score Wise College List: How to Plan
Many students ask for a GATE score wise college list. There is no fixed official list, because cutoffs change every year with the number of applicants, seats, branch and category. Instead of looking for a single number, use this approach:
- Check the previous 3 years’ cutoffs of each institute for your branch and category.
- Divide your options into three groups: ambitious, realistic and safe.
- Consider both GATE score and rank. Some institutes use the GATE score, while others use the rank or percentile.
- Look at other criteria. Several IITs also consider academic record, written tests or interviews along with GATE.
- Use multiple counselling routes. COAP for IITs, CCMT for NITs and IIITs, and separate state processes can be used together.
A rough guide to how score range relates to opportunities is below. These bands are general and not cutoffs, so always confirm from the institute’s own data.
| Score level | What it usually means |
|---|---|
| Very high score (top ranks in your paper) | Strong chance at older IITs and IISc in competitive branches |
| High score | Good chance at newer IITs, top NITs and IIITs, and PSU shortlisting |
| Good score | Chances at NITs, state universities and good private colleges; many PSU shortlists |
| Qualifying score | Many other institutes and PhD options through institute-level selection |
GATE Rank vs College for CSE
GATE rank vs college CSE is one of the most searched questions, because Computer Science is among the most competitive papers. The general pattern is:
- The very top CSE ranks aim for IISc, the older IITs and IIIT Hyderabad.
- Better-than-average ranks target newer IITs, top NITs and leading IIITs.
- Mid-range scores can target other NITs, central and state universities, and private institutes.
Exact cutoffs vary by year and by programme, and some institutes call candidates for a test or interview after shortlisting by GATE. Use the closing score or rank of the previous year as your reference, and prepare for both GATE and the institute-level selection.
List of Colleges in Kerala Accepting GATE Based on 2027 Ranking
If you want to study in Kerala, several institutes admit M.Tech students through GATE. The list below is organised by the type of institute, and you should check each institute’s latest ranking and notification for GATE 2027 admissions.
| Institute | Location | Type |
|---|---|---|
| NIT Calicut | Kozhikode | National Institute of Technology |
| IIT Palakkad | Palakkad | Indian Institute of Technology |
| IIST Thiruvananthapuram | Thiruvananthapuram | Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology |
| CUSAT | Kochi | State university |
| Government Engineering College, Sreekrishnapuram | Palakkad | Government engineering college |
| NSS College of Engineering | Palakkad | Aided engineering college |
| Department of Computer Science, University of Kerala | Thiruvananthapuram | University department |
| Other government and private engineering colleges | Across Kerala | State-affiliated M.Tech programmes |
NIT Calicut is generally listed as the leading M.Tech destination in Kerala, followed by IIST and IIT Palakkad, according to college ranking portals. Rankings depend on the year and the source, so check the latest NIRF data. Many state-level M.Tech seats are filled through state admission processes that use GATE, so follow the notification of the concerned authority.
Tip for Kerala students: apply to the central institutes (NIT Calicut, IIT Palakkad, IIST) through their own portals and counselling, and keep state-level options open as a backup.
Which Universities Accept GATE Score Outside India?
Some universities abroad accept GATE for Indian applicants to postgraduate engineering programmes. Commonly mentioned ones are:
| University | Country | Notes |
|---|---|---|

- Only some programmes and departments accept GATE, and rules can change, so confirm on the university website.
- Most universities abroad do not accept GATE and ask for other tests such as the GRE.
How to Choose the Right College With Your GATE Score
- Programme and specialisation: Check that the college offers the specialisation you want.
- Faculty and research: For research careers, look at faculty publications and labs.
