GATE is conducted jointly by the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and the IITs on behalf of the National Coordination Board (NCB), Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education.
What’s New in GATE 2027?
The GATE 2027 notification brings a few important changes. Note these before you start preparing.
- New test paper: Robotics and Automation (RA) has been introduced as a new paper.
- Textile Engineering and Fibre Science is no longer a separate paper. It is now part of the XE paper as section XE9.
- Paper codes changed for the multi-section papers XE, XH and XL. For example, XE-A (Engineering Mathematics) is now XE0, XH-B1 is now XH0, and XL-P is now XL0.
- Syllabus revised for most test papers. Each subject’s topics are now split into Core Topics and Special Topics, with at least 90% of questions from Core Topics and at most 10% from Special Topics.
- Live facial details must be provided during registration, and registering with a verified DigiLocker account is recommended.
- Compensatory time for PwD candidates follows the Government of India guidelines dated 1 August 2025.

GATE 2027 Eligibility Criteria
There is no age limit for GATE 2027. A candidate who is currently in the third year or higher of any undergraduate degree, or who has already completed a government-approved degree in Engineering, Technology, Architecture, Science, Commerce, Arts or Humanities, is eligible.

If you are pursuing or have completed a degree higher than the one listed, you are also eligible. Candidates with degrees from outside India must be in the third year or higher, or must have completed a bachelor’s degree of at least three years’ duration.
GATE 2027 Age Limit: Who Can Apply
GATE 2027 does not impose any age restrictions. Candidates from any age group can appear for the exam, providing opportunities for both young aspirants and experienced professionals seeking advanced education or PSU recruitment.
GATE 2027 Test Papers and Codes
GATE 2027 is conducted for 30 test papers. A candidate may appear for one or two papers, and the two-paper combination must be from the list given in the notification (Table 4).

Two-paper combinations (examples): CS can be combined with DA, EC, GE, MA, PH, RA, ST or ME. CE can be combined with AE, AG, AR, ES, GE, NM or XE. MN has no second-paper option. The full tentative list is in the PDF above.
How to Apply for GATE 2027 (Application Process)
Applications were accepted only online through the GATE Online Application Processing System (GOAPS) on gate2027.iitm.ac.in. Hard copies must not be sent to IIT Madras or any GATE office.
- Register using a verified DigiLocker account (recommended) and get your Enrolment ID by email.
- Fill in the application: personal details (name and date of birth exactly as in your photo ID), address, degree details, college details, test paper(s) and three exam city choices.
- Upload documents: photograph, signature, photo ID and certificates (SC/ST/PwD/dyslexia), where applicable.
- Capture a live photo during registration (use a computer with a webcam or a 5 MP phone camera).
- Check the form using “Save and View Application”. No changes are possible once you click “Submit and Proceed to Payment”.
- Pay the fee online and download the PDF copy of your submitted application.
- Track the status (Received, Under scrutiny, Accepted, Defect, Rejected) and rectify any defects within the stipulated time.

GATE 2027 Application Fee
The fee is per test paper. For two papers, the fee is double. Bank and service charges are extra.

The fee is not transferable and not refundable, except when a particular two-paper combination is removed. Payment can be made by UPI, debit card, credit card, wallet or internet banking.
GATE 2027 Exam city choices
You can choose three cities from the same GATE zone. GATE 2027 will be held in 300+ cities across India. There are no international centres, and the committee may allot a city outside your choices because of operational constraints.
GATE 2027 Documents required
- Photo ID (Aadhaar, Aadhaar Virtual ID, Passport, PAN card, Voter ID, Driving Licence or any valid government photo ID). Carry the same original ID to the exam.
- SC/ST certificate, if claiming the fee concession (OBC-NCL and EWS candidates need not upload a certificate).
- PwD certificate (UDID preferred) or dyslexia certificate, if applicable.

Photos or signatures that do not meet the rules can lead to rejection, and the fee will not be refunded.

GATE 2027 Question types and negative marking
- MCQ: four options, one correct. Negative marking applies: 1/3 mark deducted for a 1-mark question and 2/3 mark for a 2-mark question.
- MSQ: one or more correct options. No negative marking and no partial marking.
- NAT: answer typed with the on-screen virtual keypad. No negative marking and no partial marking.
Only the on-screen virtual scientific calculator is allowed.

The General Aptitude section has 5 questions of 1 mark and 5 questions of 2 marks.
GATE 2027 Admit Card and Exam Day Rules
- The exam city will be intimated in January 2027. Admit card dates will be announced on the official website.
- Admit cards are downloaded from GOAPS. They are not sent by post or email.
- Carry a printed copy (preferably colour, A4) along with the original photo ID used in your application.
- You may take your seat 40 minutes before the start, and log in 20 minutes before. Login is not allowed after 15 minutes from the scheduled start. You cannot leave before the exam ends.
- Mobile phones (even switched off), watches, calculators, wallets, papers and any electronic devices are strictly prohibited. Rough work is done on the scribble pad provided.
- Requests to change the centre, date or time on the admit card are not entertained.
- Malpractice can lead to cancellation of candidature and a ban of up to 3 years.
GATE 2027 Result, Score and Qualifying Marks
The GATE 2027 result will be announced on 19 March 2027 on GOAPS. After the exam, your responses and the answer keys will be released, and candidates can submit contests against the answer keys for a fee.
- Qualifying marks (General) = max(25, min(40, mean + standard deviation of the paper)).
- OBC-NCL / EWS: 90% of the General qualifying marks.
- SC / ST / PwD: two-thirds of the General qualifying marks.
- GATE Score is calculated on a scale where the qualifying mark gets a score of 350 and the mean of the top 0.1% (or top 10 candidates, whichever is larger) gets 900.
- For papers held in multiple sessions, marks are normalized before the score is calculated.
- The scorecard is valid for three years. Scorecards can be downloaded for ₹500 per paper after the free period, and none will be issued from 1 January 2028.
Scope of GATE 2027: Why Take It?
- M.Tech. / Direct Ph.D. admission at IISc, IITs, NITs and other institutes supported by the Ministry of Education, with possible scholarship or assistantship. The MoE guidelines prescribe at least 70% weightage to GATE performance for such admissions.
- PSU recruitment: organizations such as BHEL, NTPC, ONGC, IOCL, GAIL, Power Grid, SAIL, BSNL, NHAI and Coal India have used GATE scores for hiring in the past.
- Group-A central government posts, such as roles in the Cabinet Secretariat, are recruited through GATE scores.
Qualifying GATE does not guarantee admission, a scholarship or a job. These depend on the admitting institute or the recruiting organization.
