Nobel Prize 2022: Six days, six awards, and six new faces! Yes, the month of October is the beginning of the Nobel Seasons. The season of Nobel Prize announcements for the 2022 year begins on Monday with the prize for medicine. This Year, Svante Paabo, a Swedish scientist, won the 2022 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for discoveries “concerning the genomes of extinct hominins and human evolution.” The Nobel Assembly at the Karolinska Institutet will release the list of winners for the other categories in the following days, followed by daily announcements: physics on Tuesday, chemistry on Wednesday, and literature on Thursday. The 2022 Nobel Prizes for Peace and Economics will be announced on Friday and Oct. 10, respectively.
Who is Svante Paabo? – Brief Profile
A Swedish geneticist who is focus on evolutionary genetics. He is known as one of the founders of paleogenetics, a field that uses genetics to study early humans and other ancient populations. Paabo was one of the pioneers of paleogenetics and has put a lot of effort into understanding the Neanderthal DNA. In 1997, he was named the department’s director at the Leipzig, Germany-based Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology. For his research on the genomes of extinct hominins and the history of humanity, he received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2022.
He was given the highest honour in German science, the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize, by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft in 1992. In 2000, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences elected Pääbo as a member. He won the prestigious Louis-Jeantet Prize for Medicine in 2005. Pääbo joined the group of winners of the Order Pour le Mérite for Sciences and Arts in 2008. The American Academy of Achievement’s Golden Plate Award was given to him the same year.Pääbo’s work isolating and decoding ancient DNA, which began in 1984 with a 2,400-year-old mummy, earned him the 2009 Kistler Prize, which was announced by the Foundation for the Future in October 2009. He received the Theodor Bücher Medal in June 2010 from the Federation of European Biochemical Societies (FEBS) in recognition of his remarkable contributions to biochemistry and molecular biology. For his groundbreaking work in evolutionary genetics, he was awarded the Gruber Prize in Genetics in 2013. He received the DSc (honoris causa) degree from NUI Galway in June 2015. In 2016, he was selected as a Foreign Member of the Royal Society, and in 2017, he received the Dan David Prize. For decoding the first Neanderthal genome, he won the Princess of Asturias Awards in scientific research in 2018, the Japan Prize in 2020, the Massry Prize in 2021, and the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2022.
