GATE 2027 Eligibility to Apply

There is no age limit. You can apply if you are currently in the third year or higher of any undergraduate degree, or have completed a government-approved degree in Engineering, Technology, Architecture, Science, Commerce, Arts or Humanities.

A higher degree than the ones listed also qualifies. Candidates with degrees from outside India need to be in the third year or higher, or have completed a bachelor’s degree of at least three years.

GATE 2027 Test Papers and Two-Paper Rules

You can apply for one or two papers. The two-paper combination must be chosen from the approved list in the brochure (Table 4).

Note: Candidates must choose their primary paper first and select the secondary paper from the permitted combinations. Unlisted combinations are not allowed during the initial regular and extended registration windows. Check the official GATE 2027 two-paper combinations for updates.

GATE 2027 exam pattern

Choices you must make at the time of application:

• GG paper: choose Part B1 (Geology) or B2 (Geophysics) in the application form. It cannot be changed in the exam hall.
• XH paper: choose one section from XH1 to XH6 in the application form. It cannot be changed in the exam hall.
• AR, GE and RA papers: the Part B choice is made during the exam.
• XE and XL papers: the optional sections (at most two) are chosen during the exam.

How to Apply Online for GATE 2027: Step-by-Step

Applications were accepted only online via GOAPS on gate2027.iitm.ac.in. Do not send hard copies of the form or documents to IIT Madras or any GATE office.

Step 1: Register

• Create a verified DigiLocker account first. It is recommended for a smooth registration and at the exam centre.
• Indian nationals register through DigiLocker. Other nationals register with full name (as in passport/ID), email, mobile number and password.
• Only one person can register with one email address. Email and mobile number cannot be changed later, so use your own.
• You will receive a unique Enrolment ID by email. Keep it for all communication.
• Choose a password of 8 to 15 characters that is not easy to guess (not your name, date of birth or a sequence like 12345678).

Step 2: Fill in the application form

Keep these ready:

• Personal details: name, date of birth, personal mobile number, parent or guardian name and mobile number
• Address for communication with PIN code
• Degree details and college name and address with PIN code
• Choice of test paper(s)
• Choice of three exam cities (all from the same GATE zone)
• Photo ID details

Name and date of birth must match your photo ID exactly. Do not use prefixes such as Mr., Shri, Dr., Mrs., Smt., Prof., Capt., Maj., Lt. or Col. before your name. The GATE 2027 scorecard is issued as per the name entered in the form.

Step 3: Capture a live photo

Live facial details are captured during registration. Use a computer with a webcam or a phone with a 5 MP camera.

Step 4: Upload documents

For foreign nationals appearing at centres in India, only a valid Passport, government-issued ID or Driving Licence is accepted as ID.

Step 5: Review and submit

• GOAPS lets you save a partly filled form, log out and continue later.
• Click “Save and View Application” and check every detail first.
• Once you click “Submit and Proceed to Payment”, no changes can be made. Accept the declaration that your details are correct.
• Avoid getting the form filled by a friend or an internet cafe. You remain responsible for every detail.

Step 6: Pay the fee

• Pay through the payment gateway. The fee and bank charges are shown before you confirm.
• After successful payment you are redirected to GOAPS, where you can download a PDF copy of your submitted application.
• Payment problems: if you are not sure the payment went through, check your bank account and log in to GOAPS again after some time. If GATE has received the payment, continue; if not, pay again.
• If money was debited but no acknowledgement came, it is credited back to the same account within 15 working days. Extra payments due to technical glitches are also refunded within 15 working days. Do not wait for the refund. Make a fresh payment so you can submit before the deadline.
• Apply and pay well before the closing date to avoid heavy portal load.

Step 7: Track status and fix defects

Applications are scrutinised against your documents, photo and signature. Status shows as Received, Under scrutiny, Accepted, Defect, Status after rectification, or Rejected with reasons. Defects are intimated by email, SMS or WhatsApp and must be rectified within the stipulated time. Log in regularly to check.

Forgot your user ID or password?

If you have forgotten your GATE 2027 user ID or password, visit the official GATE 2027 application portal and click the relevant Forgot User ID or Forgot Password option. Follow the instructions to retrieve your user ID or reset your password and log in to your account.

GATE 2027 Application Fee

The fee is charged per test paper. For two papers you pay double. Bank, service and processing charges are extra.

• The fee is not transferable and not refundable, except when a particular two-paper combination is removed.
• Payment modes: UPI, debit card, credit card, wallet and internet banking.
• Enable the e-commerce transaction facility on your card before paying.

What if the fee is deducted but payment is not confirmed?

The amount is credited back within 15 working days. Make a fresh payment to complete your application on time.

GATE 2027 Photograph and Signature Specifications

Photograph

• Colour, passport size (3.5 cm width x 4.5 cm height), white background, frontal view, taken within the last 3 months
• Face must show forehead, eyes, nose and chin. No cap, hat, sunglasses or coloured glasses. Normal spectacles are fine if there is no glare
• Face covers 30 to 35% of the photograph; after cropping, the face covers 60 to 70% of the image
• Format JPEG/JPG, aspect ratio between 0.66 and 0.89
• Resolution: minimum 200 x 260 pixels, maximum 530 x 690 pixels
• Maximum file size: 600 kB
• Head coverings only for religious reasons, with the face clearly visible from chin to forehead
• The same photograph appears on your admit card and scorecard

Signature

• JPEG/JPG, height to width ratio of 1 : R where R is between 2.75 and 3.75
• Signature covers 70 to 80% of the image
• Black or dark blue ink only, signed by the applicant
• Resolution: minimum 250 x 80 pixels, maximum 580 x 180 pixels
• Maximum file size: 300 kB
• Not allowed: digital signatures, signature in capital letters, initials only, coloured ink, dark background, or text around the signature

Photos or signatures not meeting these rules can lead to rejection of the application, and the fee is not refunded. A signature that does not match the one at the exam can lead to disqualification.

Special Provisions During Application (PwD and Dyslexic Candidates) – GATE 2027

• Request for a scribe and compensatory time must be made at the time of filling the application. On-the-spot requests in the exam hall are not entertained.
• Compensatory time is 20 minutes per hour (60 minutes extra for the 3-hour exam), as per the Government of India guidelines dated 1 August 2025.
• GATE arranges scribes. Bringing your own scribe is discouraged and allowed only if GATE cannot arrange one. In that case, submit the scribe details in the Appendix B2 proforma.
• Scribes arranged by GATE must be 2 to 3 academic years below the minimum qualification for GATE.
• Candidates can use assistive devices they bring themselves, and can view the screen in magnified font (about 1.25x or 1.5x).

GATE 2027 Correction Window: What You Can Still Change

Till 21 October 2026, candidates who have already applied can change category, test paper and exam city choices, add a new test paper, and change personal details. An additional fee may apply per change. Email and mobile number cannot be changed.

After Applying for GATE 2027: Exam City, Admit Card and Exam Day

• Exam city is notified in January 2027 (4 January 2027 as per the dates table). The committee may allot a city outside your choices for operational reasons.
• Admit cards are downloaded from GOAPS and are not sent by post or email. Carry a colour A4 printout and your original photo ID.
• You may enter your seat 40 minutes early and log in 20 minutes before. Login is not allowed after 15 minutes from the start.
• Mobile phones, watches, calculators, wallets, papers and electronic devices are prohibited. Use the on-screen virtual calculator.
• Requests to change centre, date or time are not entertained.
