Educational Qualification
Candidates applying for the position of Higher Secondary School Teacher (HSST) in Commerce must meet the following educational criteria:
I. Possess a Master’s Degree in the concerned subject with at least 50% marks from any of the universities in Kerala or an equivalent qualification recognized by a university in Kerala.
II. (i) Hold a B.Ed. degree in the concerned subject obtained through a regular course of study from any of the universities in Kerala or an equivalent qualification recognized by a university in Kerala.
(ii) Alternatively, in the absence of candidates with a B.Ed. degree in the concerned subject, possess a B.Ed. degree in the relevant faculty as specified in the Acts and Statutes of any of the universities in Kerala.
(iii) If candidates with B.Ed. degrees specified in (i) and (ii) are unavailable, possess a B.Ed. degree in any subject acquired through a regular course of study from any of the universities in Kerala or an equivalent qualification recognized by any of the universities in Kerala.
III. Have successfully cleared the State Eligibility Test (SET) for the post of Higher Secondary School Teacher conducted by the Government of Kerala or by an agency authorized by the State Government (GO (P) No. 144/2001/Gl.Edn dated 16.04.2001).
To Remember
- Candidates without a B.Ed. degree but holding a Master’s degree with at least 50% marks and having passed the State Eligibility Test (SET) will be considered. Preference will be given to those with a Ph.D./M.Phil. degree or who have qualified for Junior Research Fellowship/National Eligibility Test (NET). Teachers appointed under this provision must obtain a B.Ed. degree at their own expense within five years from their date of entry into service.
- Individuals who have completed a Language Teachers Training Course are exempt from the requirement to obtain a B.Ed. qualification.
- Candidates holding an M.Ed. degree in the relevant subject recognized by any university in Kerala are exempt from the requirement to obtain a B.Ed. qualification.
- Candidates who claim an equivalent qualification instead of the qualification specified in the notification must provide an equivalency certificate or the relevant Government Order during certificate verification. Only then will such qualifications be considered equivalent to the prescribed qualification.
- In cases where there is a discrepancy between the caste/community claimed in the application and that recorded in the SSLC book, candidates must furnish a Gazette notification addressing this change, along with the Non Creamy Layer Certificate or Community Certificate, at the time of certificate verification
- Candidates possessing non-qualifying degrees such as Ph.D./M.Phil./Post Doctoral Fellowship will receive additional weightage marks, provided these degrees are in subjects related to the essential qualifications for the post. The weightage marks for non-qualifying degrees are as follows:
- Non-Qualifying M.Phil: 2 marks
- Non-Qualifying Ph.D.: 4 marks
- Both M.Phil and Ph.D. (Non-Qualifying): 5 marks
- Post Doctoral Fellowship: 2 marks
Non-qualifying degrees refer to additional qualifications earned beyond those required as essential qualifications for the post. If a Ph.D./M.Phil./Post Doctoral Fellowship is considered an essential qualification for the post, no weightage marks will be awarded for it. Weightage marks will only be awarded for non-qualifying degrees claimed in the application and obtained on or before the application deadline.
Exemptions
- Candidates who have passed the State Level Eligibility Test (SLET) for College Lecturers conducted by the Government of Kerala are exempt from the State Eligibility Test required for Higher Secondary School Teachers.
- Those who have cleared the National Eligibility Test (NET) or Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) are exempt from the State Eligibility Test.
- Individuals holding a Ph.D./M.Phil./M.Ed. degree are exempt from the State Eligibility Test, provided the M.Phil. degree in the relevant subject is awarded by any university in Kerala or recognized as equivalent by a university in Kerala.
- Teachers with a minimum of 10 years of approved teaching experience at the High School level in the General Education subordinate service are exempt from the State Eligibility Test (GO(P) No. 36/2005/Gl.Edn. dated 04.02.2005).
- SC/ST and Differently Abled candidates are eligible for a relaxation of 5% marks in their Post Graduation as per G.O.(Ms) No.288/15/Gl.Edn. dated 13.11.15.
Age Limit
- Candidates born on or after January 1, 2004 (both dates inclusive) are eligible to apply for this post, with the usual age relaxation applicable to Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and Other Backward Communities.
