Apprentice jobs are intended to provide hands-on practice and on the job training to new graduates. It’s a bitter truth that our academic practices and professional practices had a wider gap. To fill this gap, different professional bodies, public sector organizations joined together through the Apprentices programmes. Through the Apprentices Act, 1961 government is aiming to narrow the gap between the academics and industries. Like other PSUs Indian Railways also provides the apprenticeship programme under the Apprentices Act, 1961 in certain designated engineering trades. Through this act Indian Railways engage ITI apprentices in the workshops of the Civil, Mechanical and S&T Engineering Departments, Production Units, Diesel and Electric Loco Sheds, Carriage and Wagon Depot and Electrification Projects. Successful railway ITI apprentice candidates then became industry ready to join leading workshops across India, and abroad.

Railway ITI Apprentice Selection
Every year Indian Railways invites applications for around 27000 apprentices across different trades.
The Railway ITI Apperenticejobs has three categories. They are;
- Trade apprentices – either fresh candidates or ITI qualified candidates.
- Technician apprentices -Diploma Holders
- Graduate Engineer apprentices.
Railway selects the eligible candidates towards its apprenticeship programs through any of the following sources:
- Nearest Employment Exchanges.
- SC/ ST organizations.
- ITIs wherever existing.
- Wards of Railway employees.
For selecting the apprentice’s railway will put out the notification in notice Boards of respective workshops and will be announced through local newspapers. Candidates who already had received training or job experience for one year or more after taking the Degree/ Diploma will be ineligible for training under the Apprentice Act,1961. Railways select eligible candidates through the Act Apprentices twice in a year, i.e. February/ March and September/ October to enable them to appear in All India Trade Test to be held in April/ October respectively. While selecting the apprentice’s railway has the following reservation rules;

- SC Candidates: 15%
- ST Candidates: 7½%
- OBC Candidates: 27%
- 3% of seats are reserved for physically handicapped persons.
- 3% of seats are reserved for Children of Ex-servicemen/ Serving Jawans/Serving Officers and Ex-servicemen
The vacancies for SC candidates can be filled by ST candidates or vice-versa and remaining to be allotted to the candidates from the Unreserved category. The same can be applied for the OBC category seats too.
Eligibility for Railway ITI Apprentice
- ITI candidates should have completed 15 years of age and should not have completed 24 years of age.
- The upper age limit is relaxable by 5 years and 3 years in the cases of SCs/ STs and OBCs respectively.
- Non-ITI candidates should have completed 15 years of age and should not have completed 22 years of age.
- The candidates should have passed Matriculation or 10th Class in 10+2 examination system with minimum 50% Marks in aggregate from a recognized education Board or its equivalent and also have an ITI certificate in relevant trade affiliated to NCVT/ SCVT.

- Electrician
- Welder
- Fitter
- Blacksmith
- Machinist
- Mechanical-Diesal & MV
- Carpenter
- Painter
- Lineman
- Mechanic Machine Tool Maintenance
- Refrigeration & AC Mechanic
- Wireman
- Draftsman- Civil
- Turner, etc

Railway ITI Apprentice Duration
The railway ITI apprentices will have training depending upon the trade, and workshops they are employed. The cumulative working hours per week for the apprentices should be 42 to 48 hours per week. During their second year of apprenticeship, the apprentices will have to work for 42 to 45 hours per week. On the subsequent years, the apprentices will work for the same number of hours per week as the workers in the trade in the workshop in which they are undergoing training.
Apprentice Stipend
Based on the recommendations of the Seventh Central Pay Commission, the rates of stipend to Special Class Railway Apprentices are revised. Railway ITI apprentices now receive Rs. 9100/ as their monthly stipend on their first year of apprenticeship. While on the consecutive years there will be an increment of Rs. 100. The 07th pay commission proposed Rs. 23400/ as the revised rate.
