| Category | Minimum Qualifying Percentage |
|---|---|
| UR (Unreserved) | 40% |
| EWS | 40% |
| OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) | 30% |
| SC | 30% |
| ST | 25% |
Railway Section Controller 2026 – Important CBT Rules
- Normalization of Marks: Since the CBT will be conducted across multiple shifts, normalization of marks will be carried out to ensure fairness across different sessions with varying difficulty levels.
- The normalized CBT score is used purely for shortlisting candidates for CBAT, based on merit.
- Candidates shortlisted for CBAT while availing reservation benefits under OBC(NCL)/SC/ST/EWS/ExSM will continue to be considered only against their respective category for all subsequent stages of the recruitment process.
Railway Section Controller 2026 – Shortlisting Ratio for CBAT
Candidates are shortlisted for CBAT to the extent of 8 times the number of vacancies (RRB-wise), based on merit in the Single Stage CBT. This ratio may increase or decrease depending on the requirement of the Railway Administration. Shortlisting is done separately for each community — UR, OBC-NCL, SC, ST, and EWS (including ExSM).
Stage 2: Computer Based Aptitude Test (CBAT) — Complete Details
The CBAT is a specialized psychological aptitude test conducted specifically for safety-critical posts like Section Controller, where quick decision-making, attention, and reflexes are essential.
Railway Section Controller 2026 – CBAT Exam Pattern
| Parameter | Details |
|---|---|
| Language of CBAT | English and Hindi Only |
| Qualifying Criteria | Minimum T-Score of 42 in Each Test Battery |
| Negative Marking | None |
| Relaxation in Qualifying Score | Not Permissible for Any Category (SC/ST/OBC-NCL/EWS/ExSM/PwBD) |
| Mandatory Document | Original Vision Certificate (Annexure VI / VI-A) — Required to Appear in CBAT |
Railway Section Controller 2026 – CBAT Rules
- Candidates must qualify in each of the test batteries of the CBAT to be considered further for the post of Section Controller. Failing even one battery disqualifies the candidate from the merit list, regardless of their CBT score.
- There is absolutely no negative marking in the CBAT.
- No relaxation in the minimum T-Score of 42 is permissible for any category, including SC/ST/OBC-NCL/EWS/ExSM/PwBD — this is a uniform standard applicable to all candidates.
- Candidates must produce the Vision Certificate in the prescribed format (Annexure VI for general candidates, Annexure VI-A for Ex-Servicemen) in original at the time of CBAT. Without this certificate, candidates will NOT be permitted to appear in the CBAT.
Railway Section Controller 2026 – Combined Merit Calculation (CBT + CBAT)
The final merit list for further stages is calculated using the following weightage formula:
| Component | Weightage |
|---|---|
| Computer Based Test (CBT) | 70% |
| Computer Based Aptitude Test (CBAT) | 30% |
Only candidates who have passed the CBAT will be taken into consideration for the combined merit list. The merit list is drawn ONLY from among candidates who qualify in the CBAT — CBT marks alone are not sufficient without CBAT qualification.
Stage 3: Document Verification (DV) — Complete Process
Based on the combined merit (70% CBT + 30% CBAT), candidates are shortlisted for Document Verification.
Shortlisting Ratio for DV – Railway Section Controller 2026
Shortlisting for DV and Medical Examination is done RRB-wise at the ratio of 1:1 of the vacancies for that RRB — meaning the number of candidates called for DV equals the number of notified vacancies for that specific RRB.
What Happens During Railway Section Controller 2026 Document Verification
- Candidates must produce all their original certificates along with two sets of self-attested photocopies at the time of DV.
- Candidates must also upload scanned copies (in true colour) of their photo and signature before their DV date through the designated portal.
- All certificates must be in English or Hindi only. Where original certificates are in another language, a self-attested translated version must be produced.
- Certificates must strictly follow the prescribed formats given in the CEN annexures.
- No additional time is given to candidates who fail to bring original certificates on their scheduled DV date, and their candidature is liable to be cancelled.
- Candidates absent during Document Verification will forfeit their candidature entirely.
Tie-Breaking Rule in Merit List – Railway Section Controller 2026
In case two or more candidates secure the same marks, their merit position is determined as follows:
- Older candidate is placed at a higher merit position (age-based preference)
- If age is also the same, alphabetical order (A to Z) of the given name (not surname) is used to break the tie
Stage 4: Medical Examination (ME) – Railway Section Controller 2026
The final stage of selection is the medical examination, conducted by Railway Medical Authorities to confirm the candidate’s fitness as per the A-2 medical standard:
- Distant Vision: 6/9, 6/9 without glasses (no fogging test permitted)
- Near Vision: Sn 0.6, 0.6 without glasses
- Must additionally pass tests for Colour Vision, Binocular Vision, Night Vision, and Myopic Vision
Candidates who have undergone LASIK or any other corrective eye surgery are disqualified at this stage if not already declared earlier, since this is a strict eligibility restriction for the Section Controller post.
Medical Appeal Provision for Railway Section Controller 2026
Candidates who avail the medical appeal option within the permitted timeframe (on payment of prescribed charges) and whose appeal is accepted by the competent authority must accept the outcome of the appeal medical examination as final and binding — no further appeals are permitted. For candidates who do not opt for a medical appeal, the initial medical examination result is considered final.
If a candidate is found medically unsuitable for the post at the time of medical examination before appointment, no alternate appointment will be provided.
RRB Section Controller 2026: Normalization of Marks & Evaluation Process
Whenever the CBT is conducted in multiple sessions/shifts for the same syllabus, normalization of marks is applied to ensure fairness in shortlisting candidates for subsequent stages. This ensures candidates who attempt harder shift papers are not disadvantaged compared to those attempting relatively easier shifts.
RRB Section Controller 2026: Final Empanelment & Appointment Process
- After successful completion of CBT, CBAT, DV, and Medical Examination, RRBs recommend the names of empaneled candidates to the respective Zonal Railway.
- Appointment is offered ONLY by the respective Railway Administration — RRB’s role is limited to recommending suitable candidates based on merit.
- Selection by RRB does NOT confer any automatic right to appointment.
- RRB reserves the right to cancel or modify results in case of any inadvertent error or typographical mistake at any stage of the recruitment process, including post-empanelment or even after appointment.
This blog is based on the selection process details specified in the official CEN No. 03/2026 notification issued by the Railway Recruitment Board, Ministry of Railways. Candidates are advised to check the official RRB websites for exam dates, shift schedules, and any updates related to the selection process before appearing for each stage.
