Factors Determining GATE CE Cut Off Marks

In general, the GATE cut off score depends on a number of factors. The major ones include-

  • Number of candidates appearing for the exam
  • The difficulty level of exam
  • Total number of available seats
  • The category of the candidates

Number of candidates appearing for the exam

Year after year, the number of candidates appearing for the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering is on the rise. This clearly shows an increase in the cut off score or a higher cut off score.

The difficulty level of the exam

Usually as and when the GATE exam appears to be difficult, the cut off score becomes lower. And when the exam is on the easier side, the cut off scores also tend to rise exponentially.

Total number of available seats

As the candidates appearing for GATE are seeking admission to various post graduate courses across the country, the number of seats available in various institutions also contribute to the cut off score. Suppose if an institute has a larger share of seats for a particular course, then the cut off score for that particular course will be lowered to accommodate more number of seats.

The category of the candidate

As the candidates appearing for the GATE exam falls or hails from different categories like OBC, SC, ST, etc the cut off marks also vary from category to category. While the un reserved category of candidates must abide by a higher cut off score, all other categories enjoy a relaxation in the cut off score.
