Higher degrees: if you are pursuing or have already obtained a degree higher than the ones listed above, you are also eligible for GATE 2027.
GATE 2027 Eligibility by Student Type
- B.E. / B.Tech. students: eligible from the 3rd year. Pre-final and final-year students can apply.
- B.Sc., B.A. and B.Com. (3-year) students: eligible in the 3rd year. Note that candidates with these degrees who want M.Tech. admission at IISc, IITs, NITs and other CFTIs may also refer to JAM 2027, organised by IIT Kharagpur.
- M.Sc., M.A., M.C.A. students: eligible even in the 1st year of the master’s programme.
- M.B.B.S., B.D.S., B.V.Sc. students: eligible from the 5th semester.
- Pharm.D. students: eligible from the 3rd year of the 6-year programme.
- Integrated and dual degree students: eligible as per the years in the table above.
- Graduates of any government-approved degree: eligible with no gap or attempt-related restriction mentioned in the brochure.
Age Limit for GATE 2027
There is no age limit to appear for GATE 2027. Candidates of any age can apply if they meet the educational criteria.
Professional Society Examinations – GATE 2027
Candidates who hold certification from a professional society can apply only if their examinations are approved by MoE / AICTE / UGC / UPSC as equivalent to B.E. / B.Tech. / B.Arch. / B.Planning. The societies named in the brochure are:
- The Institution of Engineers (India) (IE)
- The Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE)
- The Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (IETE)
- The Aeronautical Society of India (AeSI)
- The Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers, including Polymer and Environmental Group (IIChE)
- The Indian Institute of Metals (IIM)
- The Indian Institute of Industrial Engineers (IIIE)
Enrolments with professional bodies with permanent recognition up to 31 May 2013 stand recognized. Candidates should check the AICTE circular dated 23 November 2020 and the related public notice for clarification.
GATE 2027 Eligibility for Foreign Degree Holders and Foreign Nationals
- Candidates pursuing or having obtained their qualifying degree from a country other than India must be in the 3rd year or higher, or must have completed a bachelor’s degree of at least three years in Engineering / Technology / Science / Commerce / Arts / Architecture / Humanities.
- Foreign nationals can apply, but there are no international centers for GATE 2027. They must travel to India to appear.
- Foreign nationals pay the “other candidates” fee, and for ID can use only a valid Passport, government-issued ID or Driving License.
Number of Papers You Are Eligible to Write – GATE 2027
A candidate may appear in one or two of the 30 test papers. For two papers, the combination must be from the tentative list in the brochure (Table 4), and the fee is double that of one paper.

What’s new: GATE 2027 introduces the Robotics and Automation (RA) paper, and Textile Engineering and Fibre Science moves under XE as XE9.
Is Minimum Percentage Required for GATE 2027?
The GATE 2027 brochure does not list a minimum percentage or CGPA as an eligibility condition for appearing in the exam. Eligibility depends on your degree and year of study. Note that admitting institutes (for M.Tech. or Ph.D.) and recruiting PSUs may set their own marks requirements, so check those separately.
Eligibility vs Qualifying in GATE 2027
Being eligible to appear is different from qualifying.
- General category qualifying marks = max(25, min(40, mean + standard deviation of the paper)).
- OBC-NCL / EWS: 90% of the General qualifying marks.
- SC / ST / PwD: two-thirds of the General qualifying marks.
- The GATE score is on a scale where the qualifying mark is 350. The score is valid for three years from the result date (19 March 2027).
Qualifying GATE does not guarantee admission, scholarship or a job. These depend on the admitting institute or recruiting organization.

GATE 2027 Eligibility Criteria – Photo ID Needed to Prove Identity
Choose any one valid photo ID while applying: Aadhaar, Aadhaar Virtual ID, Passport, PAN card, Voter ID, Driving Licence or any valid government photo ID. Carry the same original ID to the exam. Your name and date of birth in the form must match this ID exactly.

Why Eligibility Criteria Matters: Benefits of Qualifying GATE 2027
- Admission to M.Tech. and direct Ph.D. programmes in institutes supported by the Ministry of Education, with possible scholarship or assistantship. MoE guidelines prescribe at least 70% weightage to GATE performance in such admissions.
- PSU recruitment: organisations such as BHEL, NTPC, ONGC, IOCL, GAIL, Power Grid, SAIL, BSNL, NHAI and Coal India have used GATE scores.
- Direct recruitment to certain Group-A central government posts.
