Only candidates who clear each stage progress to the next. Final selection (empanelment) depends on merit in CBT-II, document verification outcome, and medical fitness.

Stage 1: 1st Stage Computer Based Test (CBT-I)

CBT-I is a screening-level exam, common for all posts notified under CEN 04/2026. Its purpose is only to shortlist candidates for CBT-II — marks scored here are not carried forward for final merit.

RRB JE 2026 CBT-I Exam Pattern

• Duration: 90 minutes (120 minutes for candidates eligible for scribe assistance)
• Question type: Objective, multiple choice
• Negative Marking: 1/3rd mark deducted for every wrong answer

RRB JE CBT-I Minimum Qualifying Marks

• These percentages also apply to Ex-Servicemen candidates, as per their respective community.
• A relaxation of 2 marks in qualifying marks is allowed for PwBD candidates, in case of a shortage of PwBD candidates against reserved vacancies.

What Happens After CBT-I?

• Your normalized score in CBT-I is used only to shortlist candidates for CBT-II — it does not carry forward to your final merit.
• Candidates who are shortlisted for CBT-II while availing reservation benefits (community, PwBD, or ExSM) will continue to be considered only against that same community/category for all subsequent stages. You cannot switch categories after this point.

Stage 2: 2nd Stage Computer Based Test (CBT-II)

CBT-II is the discipline-specific technical exam and forms the actual basis of your final merit and empanelment.

RRB JE 2026 CBT-II Exam Pattern

• Duration: 120 minutes (160 minutes for scribe-eligible candidates)
• Negative Marking: 1/3rd mark deducted for every wrong answer
• A virtual calculator will be available on the computer monitor during CBT-II.

RRB JE CBT-II Minimum Qualifying Marks

Same as CBT-I — a 2-mark relaxation applies for PwBD candidates in case of shortage against reserved vacancies.

Who Gets Shortlisted for CBT-II?

• Shortlisting for CBT-II is based on your normalized marks in CBT-I.
• The total number of candidates shortlisted for CBT-II is 15 times the community-wise total vacancy of posts notified against your chosen RRB, based on CBT-I merit.
• RRBs reserve the right to increase or decrease this ratio, in total or for specific categories, to ensure enough candidates are available for all notified posts.

Understanding Normalization & Merit Index – RRB JE 2026

Since CBT-I and CBT-II may be conducted across multiple sessions/shifts, and candidates come from different Exam Groups (Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics, Civil), RRB uses a normalization process and a Merit Index formula to ensure fairness.

Normalization of Marks

• Whenever a CBT is conducted in multiple sessions, raw marks are converted into normalized marks to account for difficulty variation between sessions.
• For a single-session CBT, your actual/raw marks are used directly.

Merit Index Formula

To create a single combined merit list across different Exam Groups (since candidates from Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics, and Civil streams all compete for common posts), RRB computes a Merit Index using the following formula:

Merit Index = Sq + (St − Sq) × [(M − Mq) / (Mt − Mq)]

Where:

The Merit Index is calculated for UR, EWS, OBC-NCL, SC, and ST candidates whose marks meet or exceed the community qualifying marks. Based on this Merit Index, a combined merit list of candidates from different Exam Groups is prepared in descending order, and post/zone allotment is done according to this list.

This formula ensures that a candidate from, say, the Electronics exam group isn’t unfairly disadvantaged or advantaged compared to a candidate from the Civil exam group, even if their raw score distributions differ.

Stage 3: Document Verification (DV)

Once you clear CBT-II with the required merit, you’re shortlisted for Document Verification — a crucial stage where your original certificates are checked against the details you submitted online.

How Shortlisting for DV Works

• Candidates are shortlisted for DV based on their marks and merit in CBT-II, combined with their zone/post preference options.
• The number of candidates shortlisted for DV is equal to the number of vacancies — this is a 1:1 ratio (unlike the 15x ratio used for CBT-II shortlisting).
• In case of a tie in marks, merit is broken using:

1. Age — the older candidate is ranked higher
2. If age is also the same — alphabetical order (A–Z) of the candidate’s given name (not surname)

What Happens at Document Verification

• You must bring all original documents, along with two sets of self-attested photocopies.
• No additional time will be given if you fail to bring your original certificates — your candidature is liable to be forfeited.
• Before your DV date, you must upload scanned copies (in true colour) of your photo and signature through the official DV portal.
• Certificates must be in English or Hindi; if not, a self-attested translated version must be produced.
• Candidates absent during DV will have their candidature cancelled.
• If you’re claiming reservation/relaxation (SC/ST/OBC-NCL/EWS/ExSM/PwBD) but fail to produce the required original certificate in the prescribed format, your claim will not be entertained, and you’ll instead be considered under the General (UR) category, if eligible.

Documents Typically Required at DV

• Original educational qualification certificates (with issue date, or consolidated mark sheet with result declaration date)
• Category certificate (SC/ST/OBC-NCL/EWS) in the prescribed Annexure format
• Age proof (Matriculation/SSLC certificate)
• PwBD disability certificate & UDID (if applicable)
• Ex-Servicemen discharge/service certificate (if applicable)
• NOC from current employer (if already in government service)
• Any other document specific to your claimed benefits

Stage 4: Medical Examination (ME)

The final stage is the Medical Examination, conducted by the Railway Administration to confirm you meet the medical fitness standard prescribed for your specific post.

Key Rules on Medical Examination

• You must pass the medical fitness test prescribed for the post(s) you’ve opted for (Medical Standard A-3, B-1, B-2, or C-1, as specified in Annexure A).
• Candidates found medically unsuitable for their opted post will NOT be offered any alternative appointment.
• If you fail your initial medical examination, you may be offered one last opportunity to appeal via a Medical Appeal, on payment of prescribed charges. The result of the appeal is final and binding.
• If you don’t avail the medical appeal option within the allowed time, your initial medical result will be treated as final.

Final Empanelment & Post Allotment – RRB JE 2026

After successfully clearing all four stages, candidates are empanelled based on merit, subject to:

1. Successful completion of Document Verification
2. Passing the prescribed Medical Examination
3. Final verification of educational and community certificates
4. Verification of antecedents/character

RRB JE Apply Zone 2026 – How Zone/Post Allotment Works

• RRB allots a Railway Zone/Production Unit as per your option (preference order), subject to your merit, medical standard, and vacancy position at the time of finalizing the panel.
• Once you’re empanelled as per your merit and choice, you forfeit your right to be considered for a higher-priority zone/unit later.
• RRBs also reserve the right to allot a zone/unit not opted by you, in administrative interest, provided you still meet eligibility requirements.
• Note: RRBs only recommend the names of empanelled candidates to the concerned Railway Administration. The actual Offer of Appointment is issued by the respective Zonal Railway, not by the RRB directly.
• In case of any shortfall in empanelment, RRBs reserve the right to utilize candidates further down the merit list, based on their merit and preferences — though this doesn’t confer any automatic right to appointment.
