RRB JE Vacancy 2026 — Category-wise Breakup (Grand Total)
Here’s how the 3993 vacancies are distributed across reservation categories (vertical reservation), along with horizontal reservation for Ex-Servicemen and PwBD candidates:

RRB JE Vacancy 2026 — RRB (Zone) Wise Breakup
Candidates can apply to only ONE RRB, so it’s worth understanding which RRB offers the most opportunities in your preferred region.
RRB Kolkata, Mumbai, Chennai, Prayagraj, and Guwahati together account for a significant share of total vacancies, while RRB Muzaffarpur and Malda have the smallest vacancy counts. However, more vacancies also usually means more competition and a larger applicant pool — smaller RRBs can sometimes offer better selection odds for well-prepared candidates.

How RRB JE Vacancy Numbers Actually Work — Important Rules
Understanding the fine print behind these vacancy figures is just as important as the numbers themselves.
1. Vacancies Are Provisional
- The numbers notified in CEN 04/2026 are provisional and may increase, decrease, or become NIL for specific communities or units, based on the actual requirement of the Railway Administration at the time.
- Additional posts may be added later; RRBs also reserve the right to cancel notified vacancies at their discretion — in such cases, examination fees are not refunded, except for candidates who attended CBT-I.
2. Choose Only One RRB — Vacancy Access Depends on It
- You can apply to only ONE RRB and can express preferences only for the Railway Zones and posts/categories notified under that specific RRB.
- If you give partial options (i.e., you don’t mark preference for every zone/post you’re eligible for), you’ll only be considered for the specific zones/posts you did select — not the full list.
- If you give no option at all for certain posts/categories, this is treated as your unwillingness for those posts.
3. UR Vacancies Are Open to Everyone
- All candidates, irrespective of community, can compete for Unreserved (UR) vacancies, subject to meeting UR eligibility conditions.
- However, vacancies reserved for SC, ST, OBC-NCL, and EWS will be filled only by candidates belonging to that specific community/category.
4. Horizontal Reservation Works Differently
- Ex-Servicemen (ExSM) and PwBD vacancies are horizontal reservations, meaning they cut across all community categories (a PwBD candidate from the SC category, for example, competes within the SC vacancy pool with the PwBD relaxation applied).
- Where PwBD vacancies are shown separately as backlog vacancies (without any community indication), these are unfilled vacancies from previous recruitment cycles and are not included in the regular community-wise vacancy numbers shown in this CEN.
- If PwBD backlog vacancies for a specific disability category cannot be filled due to unavailability of suitable candidates, they can be filled by PwBD candidates of other disabilities for which the post is suitable. If still unfilled, they’re eventually filled by regular (non-PwBD) candidates in order of merit.
5. Vacancies Reserved for ExSM/PwBD Are Not Mandatory to Use
- Ex-Servicemen are eligible for vacancies specifically reserved for them, but if no ExSM vacancy exists for a post, they can still apply against regular vacancies — continuing to receive age relaxation and fee exemption only.
- The same rule applies to PwBD candidates applying to posts suitable for their disability, even without a dedicated PwBD vacancy.
6. Unfilled Reserved Vacancies
- If vacancies reserved for PwBD cannot be filled due to non-availability of suitable candidates, such vacancies are not transferred to other categories — they are simply treated as a “Shortfall” for that notification.
Choosing Your RRB & Zone: Strategic Tips
With 21 RRBs and varying vacancy counts, here’s how to make an informed choice:
- Check total vacancies in your target RRB — more vacancies generally mean a statistically better chance, but competition (number of applicants) also tends to be higher in vacancy-rich zones.
- Match your Exam Group to available posts — if you’re from the Mechanical stream, prioritize RRBs with strong Mechanical/C&W vacancy numbers; similarly for Electrical, Electronics/S&T, and Civil streams.
- Consider your category’s specific vacancy count — the overall RRB total doesn’t tell you your actual competition; check the SC/ST/OBC-NCL/EWS/UR breakup specific to your category within that RRB.
- Factor in geography and posting preference — since transfer to another Railway zone is not registered until you complete 5 to 10 years of service, choose your RRB and zone preference with long-term consideration, not just vacancy count.
- Don’t leave preferences blank — always mark your preference for every zone/post you’re eligible for and interested in, since unmarked options are treated as unwillingness.
