CBT Negative Marking Rule – RRB Section Controller 2026
There shall be negative marking for incorrect answers in the CBT. A deduction of 1/3rd of the marks allotted for each question shall be made for every wrong answer. Since each question carries 1 mark, this means 0.33 marks will be deducted per incorrect response. There is no negative marking for questions left unattempted.
CBT Normalization of Marks – RRB Section Controller 2026
Normalization of marks will be done for CBTs held in multiple shifts. This is essential because RRBs conduct the CBT across several sessions/shifts to accommodate the large number of applicants, and question difficulty may vary slightly between shifts. Normalization ensures fairness by adjusting raw scores to a common scale before merit is calculated. The normalized score of CBT is used for shortlisting candidates for CBAT as per their merit, and normalization is also applied while shortlisting candidates for further stages.
RRB Section Controller 2026 – CBT Qualifying Marks (Category-Wise Minimum Percentage)
These qualifying percentages are also applicable to Ex-Servicemen candidates, as per their respective community/category. For PwBD (Persons with Benchmark Disabilities) candidates, these qualifying marks may be relaxed by 2 marks in case of shortage of PwBD candidates against vacancies reserved for them.

| EWS (Economically Weaker Sections) | 40% |
| OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) | 30% |

Computer Based Aptitude Test (CBAT) — Detailed RRB Section Controller Exam Pattern 2026
The CBAT is a specialized psychological/aptitude assessment specifically designed for safety-critical railway operational posts like Section Controller, testing attributes such as attention, perception, reaction time, and decision-making ability — beyond what a conventional written test can measure.
| Parameter | Details |
|---|---|
| Language of CBAT | English and Hindi only (Questions and Answer Options) |
| Shortlisting Ratio for CBAT | 8 times the number of vacancies (RRB-wise), based on CBT merit, shortlisted separately for each community — UR, OBC-NCL, SC, ST, EWS (including ExSM) |
| Qualifying Criteria | Minimum T-Score of 42 marks in each test battery |
| Relaxation in T-Score | Not permissible for any candidate, irrespective of community/category (SC/ST/OBC-NCL/EWS/ExSM/PwBD) |
| Negative Marking | None |
| Mandatory Document | Vision Certificate (Annexure VI for general candidates / Annexure VI-A for Ex-Servicemen) required in original at CBAT |
RRB Section Controller CBAT 2026: Key Rules and Guidelines
- Candidates must qualify in each of the test batteries of the CBAT to be considered for the post of Section Controller. Failing to clear even one test battery, regardless of a high CBT score, disqualifies the candidate from further consideration.
- There is no negative marking in the CBAT under any circumstances.
- The minimum qualifying T-Score of 42 applies uniformly to all candidates — no relaxation is permissible for SC/ST/OBC-NCL/EWS/ExSM/PwBD candidates.
- Without producing the original Vision Certificate (Annexure VI/VI-A) at the time of CBAT, candidates will NOT be permitted to appear for the test.
- For further reference on CBAT test batteries and structure, candidates are advised to check the RDSO (Research Designs and Standards Organisation) website:

(ii) The direct RDSO Psychology section link as provided in the official CEN
RRB Section Controller 2026 Merit List Calculation – Combined CBT + CBAT Weightage
The final merit list for Document Verification is drawn ONLY from among candidates who have qualified in the CBAT. CBT performance alone does not guarantee a place in the merit list — CBAT qualification is mandatory regardless of CBT rank.
| Component | Weightage |
|---|---|
| Computer Based Test (CBT) | 70% |
| Computer Based Aptitude Test (CBAT) | 30% |
RRB Section Controller 2026: Normalization Applicable Across CBT & CBAT Stages
Shortlisting of candidates for various stages is based on the normalized marks obtained by them, whenever the CBT is conducted in multiple sessions for the same syllabus. This applies specifically to the CBT stage, since CBAT does not have a normalization requirement (it is a qualifying test with a fixed T-Score threshold).
This blog is based on the syllabus and exam pattern details specified in the official CEN No. 03/2026 notification issued by the Railway Recruitment Board, Ministry of Railways. Candidates are advised to check the official RRB websites for detailed CBAT test battery information and any updates to the exam pattern before beginning their preparation.
