Stage 1: TNPSC Group 2A Preliminary Examination

The Preliminary Examination is common for both Group II and Group IIA Services and acts purely as a screening test. Marks scored in the Prelims are not counted towards your final merit — they only decide who advances to the Main Examination.

• Mode: Offline (OMR-based, objective type)
• Negative Marking: 1/3 mark deducted for every wrong answer
• Questions Set In: Both Tamil and English (for General Studies)

How Many Candidates Are Shortlisted for Mains?

TNPSC admits 10 times the number of candidates to be recruited (as per the reservation rule) to the Main Examination. Additionally, all candidates who score equal to the cut-off marks of their respective reservation category are also admitted — even if this pushes the ratio beyond 1:10.

Stage 2: TNPSC Group 2A Main Examination

The Main Examination for Group IIA Services consists of two papers — Paper I is qualifying in nature, while only Paper II marks are counted for final ranking.

• Paper II Total Questions: 200 (150 General Studies + 50 General Intelligence & Reasoning)
• Paper II Mode: Computer Based Test (CBT)

• Compulsory Appearance: Candidates must appear for both papers. Skipping either paper disqualifies you from selection, even if you scored well in the other.

Stage 3: TNPSC Group 2A Onscreen Certificate Verification

Once the Main Examination rank list is published, candidates are shortlisted for Onscreen Certificate Verification based on their Paper II marks.

• Candidates get 10 calendar days to upload the required certificates as per claims made in the online application.
• If any document is found defective, candidates get another 10 calendar days to re-upload the correct/defective document.
• Failure to upload documents within the stipulated time will disqualify the candidate from further stages — no exceptions.

Stage 4: TNPSC Group 2A Physical Certificate Verification

Based on the onscreen verification outcome, eligible candidates are called for Physical Certificate Verification, where all original certificates must be produced without fail.

• If a candidate fails to meet the eligibility criteria during physical verification, their online application is rejected, and their provisional admission to counselling is cancelled.
• Candidates who do not appear for physical verification on the scheduled date/time lose their chance permanently — no further opportunity is given.

Stage 5: TNPSC Group 2A Counselling & Post Allotment

The final stage of the selection process is Counselling, where eligible candidates choose their post/department based on their rank.

Key Rules for Counselling

• Candidates participate in counselling strictly based on rank (higher rank gets first preference).
• The post chosen during counselling cannot be changed under any circumstances afterward.
• Candidates who do not appear for counselling on the scheduled date/time will not get another chance.
• Candidates already selected for a post under Group II Services in this notification cannot participate in Group IIA counselling — you can be selected for only one group.

TNPSC Group 2A Ranking 2026 & Merit List Procedure

The final merit/ranking list is prepared solely based on Paper II marks of the Main Examination. Here’s how TNPSC breaks ties between candidates with equal marks:

1. First tie-breaker: Candidate with higher qualification is ranked above.
2. Second tie-breaker: If qualification is also the same, the candidate senior in age is ranked above.
3. Third tie-breaker: If age is also the same, the candidate who submitted the application earlier (based on application number) is ranked above.

Important Points to Remember About TNPSC Group 2A Selection

• Preliminary Exam marks are NOT added to your final score — they’re only for shortlisting.
• Only Paper II of the Main Exam determines your final rank; Paper I is purely qualifying.
• Vacancies notified are provisional and may be revised until Preliminary results are declared — the number of candidates admitted to subsequent stages will be revised accordingly.
• Candidates admitted to any stage do not get automatic appointment rights — TNPSC can reject candidature at any point if a wrong claim is confirmed, even post-selection.
