National Boss Day or Boss’s Day is observed on October 16th and is marked as a way of strengthening the relationship between employers and employees. After the year’s hard work, it is the day for employees to appreciate, understand and thank their bosses or employers. It is a gratitude one reaches out to their mentors for supporting them throughout the year. Though there is no specific national boss day 2021 theme, the aim of the program remains the same.
History of Boss’s Day – National Boss Day 2021
This day was first marked by Patricia Bays Haroski in 1958.
In the year 1958, Patricia Bays Haroski registered National Boss’s Days as a holiday with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce in honour of her father. He was also her employer. Through this day she wanted to improve office relationships between supervisors and their employees and to raise cognizance of all the hard work boss’s put into their jobs.
She felt that younger employees did not appreciate their bosses enough, and knowing first-hand what her father went through to make a company run smooth, changed that viewpoint completely. However, it wasn’t until Illinois Governor Otto Kerner supported Haroski’s registration four years later, that the day officially became a national holiday. Haroski worked as a secretary for State Farm Insurance Company in Deerfield, Illinois when she registered “National Boss’s Day” with the United States Chamber of Commerce, according to the National Day Calendar.

Ways to show appreciation to your boss.
Check out the tips below and see which ideas appeal to you.
-
You can send a thoughtful card to your boss.
You can express appreciation by sending a card to your boss. If you are not sure what to write on the card, think of something specific you can thank your boss for. For example, there are many executives who are planning to increase investments in tools for virtual collaboration to support remote work during the pandemic. If you have experienced that type of support, consider expressing your appreciation for that.
-
Thank your boss for the bonus.
Your boss may have played a role in getting a bonus approved for you. If you received a bonus from your company, consider thanking your boss. Failing to express your appreciation may be perceived negatively, so take a few minutes to be grateful. national boss day 2021 date
-
Give your boss a small gift relating to their interests.
If you know your boss well, you might consider giving them a small gift related to their interests. For example, you can give a set of tennis balls to a tennis-loving boss might be a good idea. Alternatively, you might send your boss a copy of a new book by their favourite author if they have a passion for reading.
Some people may not feel comfortable giving gifts to their boss because their boss may have more money or power than the employee. Therefore, be considerate when asking others to contribute money to a gift.
-
Create a thank-you video for your boss
Recording a video for your boss is another way to show your appreciation. You can use websites to record video through a laptop’s webcam as an alternative to using smartphones. There are several websites like Loom and Webcamera.io that make it easy to record a video from your computer.
-
Organize a happy hour in your boss’s honour.
Going out for drinks or going to a restaurant to recognize your boss might not be an option due to the pandemic. But you can surely organize a virtual happy hour using video conferencing. You can use delivery apps like UberEats to send a treat to your boss during the event if you have their address.
Note that some bosses might not be interested in a social event. Ask yourself if your boss has previously organized or attended happy hour events at work and enjoyed them. If so, go ahead with the plan.
Takeaway
Well, it is not a bad idea to take out some time and show appreciation to your boss. There was a study conducted by Dr Martin E. P. Seligman where participants were asked to write a letter of gratitude to anyone who they have never properly thanked before. You can go ahead with giving a letter or message that might make you and him happier. Thus, bosses, week 2021 is an important day!
