Balbir Singh Sr: Hockey legend passed away at 96
- Balbir Singh Sr., a three-time Olympic-medal winning hockey legend passed away on May 25. He was battling multiple health issues for over two weeks.
- Singh, who was member of the 1948 London Olympics gold medal-winning Indian hockey team, apart from being the vice-captain of the 1952 victorious side and skipper of the 1956 champions, had been admitted to the hospital earlier this month on May 8 due to pneumonia and was on ventilator support.
- Singh was also the oldest surviving Olympic medallist from India, a record which now passes on to his 1948 London Olympics team-mate Keshav Dutt.
India sets up military war game centre for Ugandan Defence forces
- Indian Association in Uganda along with Indian Military training team sets up a military war game centre in Jinja district for Uganda Peoples Defence Forces (UPDF).
- It is a type of strategic game that simulates warfare realistically as opposed to abstract strategy games like chess.The war game centre is named as ‘INDIA’.
- It has been constructed with an amount of 1 billion Ugandan Shillings ($265,000) funded by voluntary contributions from Ugandans of Indian origin.
J.K. Rowling announces “The Ickabog”
- On May 26, 2020, British author J.K. Rowling released the first two chapters of her new Children’s book “The lckabog”.
- The Ickabog is her first children’s book since Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows was published in 2007.
- The book has been written for children aged between 7 and 9. It is a story about abuse of power and truth.
- Joanne Rowling is a British author and screenwriter. She is best known for her seven-book Harry Potter children’s book series. Her first book Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone of Harry Potter series was published in 1997.
Major Suman Gawani to be honoured with UN Award
- Indian Army officer, Major Suman Gawani has been selected for United Nations Military Gender Advocate of the Year Award 2019.
- The award is conferred to her due to her contribution in peacekeeping efforts with United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS).
- She is the first Indian to be awarded with the United Nations Military Gender Advocate award.
Former Union Minister MP Veerendra Kumar passes away
- Former Union minister and Rajya Sabha MP from Kerala, M P Veerendra Kumar, died on Thursday. He was 84.
- He was the chairman and managing director of the Mathrubhumi Printing and Publishing Company Ltd.
- He was the national treasurer of the Samyuktha Socialist Party during 1968-70.He was the state president of the Loktantrik Janata Dal launched by Sharad Yadav.
- He had also served as a minister of state in the Union finance ministry and minister of state with independent charge of labour ministry in 1997-98.
Facebook launches ‘CatchUp’ calling application
- Facebook has launched a calling application “CatchUp” that will allow the user to indicate when they are available to talk and call friends and family.
- It is developed by the New Product Experimentation team of Facebook.
- The coordination calling can be done with a group of up to 8 people or individuals.
- It will work with existing contact lists and with their existing Facebook account.
IOC appoints Narinder Batra as Olympic Channel Commission member
- President of Indian Olympic Association (IOA), Narinder Batra has been appointed as a member of Olympic Channel Commission by International Olympic Committee (IOC).
- He had earlier served as the president of Hockey India (2014-2016) and Asian Hockey Federation (2003-2013).
- He also served as the treasurer of Delhi & District Cricket Association (2003-2013).
FM launches free instant e-PAN card facility through Aadhaar
- FM Nirmala Sitharaman launched the facility for instant allotment of e-PAN on real time basis.
- The facility will be available for PAN applicants that possess valid Aadhaar numbers. They should also have a mobile number registered with Aadhaar.
- The process of allotting PAN is paperless and is also free of cost.The instant Aadhaar based E-KYC was introduced by the Finance Minister in the Union Budget 2020-21.
- She announced that a system will be brought in that will instantly provide PAN without the requirement of filling up the application form.
CIPET renamed as Central Institute of Petrochemicals Engineering and Technology
- Central Institute of Plastics Engineering & Technology (CIPET) has been renamed as Central Institute of Petrochemicals Engineering & Technology (CIPET).
- The main objective of CIPET is to contribute towards growth of plastics.It also focuses on education and research programmes.
- CIPET can now look after the growth of the entire petrochemical sector with focus on Academics, Skilling, Technology Support and Research.
R Sreelekha became the first women DGP of Kerala
- Transport Commissioner R Sreelekha (1987 batch IPS officer) has been appointed as Kerala’s first woman DGP.
- She is a recipient of the President’s police medal.She became first woman Superintendent of Kerala Police in 1991.
- She has been named for being elevated at the post of DGP in 2017 but got the status of pending promotion due to less seats. She will retire from service in December this year.
May 29: International Day of UN Peacekeepers
- Every year, the United Nations celebrates International Day of UN Peacekeepers on May 29.
- This year the day is being celebrated under the theme “Women in Peacekeeping: A key to Peace”.
- The International Day of UN Peacekeepers is celebrated to honour more than 3,900 peacekeepers that lost their lives serving under the United Nations.
- There are more than 1 million men and women that are serving 72 UN peacekeeping operations.
Chhattisgarh’s first CM Ajit Jogi passes away
- Former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Ajit Jogi (74-years) passed away due to heart attack.
- He left the government service (Indian Administrative Service) in 1985 and became a Member of Parliament (MP) in Rajya Sabha in 1986.
- He was the first chief minister of Chhattisgarh after it was carved out of Madhya Pradesh as a separate State in November 2000.
