The GATE 2027 exam is on 6 February 2027. As of 14 October 2026, that gives you about 16 weeks (115 days). That is enough time to prepare well if you follow a clear plan. This blog gives you GATE 2027 preparation tips, tricks and a strategy built around the official exam pattern, the revised syllabus and the marking scheme from the GATE 2027 brochure, so you know exactly what to study and how to score.
How to Crack GATE 2027 in First Attempt – Preparation Tips
Cracking GATE 2027 on your first attempt requires a clear study plan, consistent practice, and effective time management. Start by understanding the syllabus and exam pattern, focus on important concepts, and practise previous years’ question papers. Take regular mock tests to improve speed and accuracy, revise topics frequently, and analyse your mistakes. Avoid last-minute preparation and maintain a consistent study routine to improve your chances of achieving a high score

GATE 2027 Marks distribution (most engineering papers)
| Section | Marks |
|---|---|
| General Aptitude | 15 |
| Engineering Mathematics | 13 |
| Subject questions | 72 |
| Total | 100 |
Papers such as CY, DA, EY, MA, PH, ST, AR, GE, GG, RA, XH and XL have 15 marks of General Aptitude and 85 marks of subject questions. XE has 15 marks of General Aptitude, 15 marks of Engineering Mathematics (XE0) and two optional sections of 35 marks each.
Average time per question: 180 minutes for 65 questions is about 2 minutes 45 seconds per question. Plan your speed around this.
Step 2: Understand What Is New in GATE 2027
- Revised syllabus for most test papers. Do not use old notes blindly. Check the updated syllabus for your paper on gate2027.iitm.ac.in (Appendix D of the brochure).
- Core and Special Topics: at least 90% of questions come from Core Topics and at most 10% from Special Topics. Finish the Core Topics first and revise them most.
- New paper: Robotics and Automation (RA).
- Textile Engineering and Fibre Science is now section XE9 of the XE paper.
- Changed section codes for XE, XH and XL papers.
- Live facial capture during registration, and DigiLocker recommended.
Step 3: Choose the Right Paper (and Second Paper)
- Choose the paper that matches your degree and your strongest subjects. Many PSUs accept only specific papers, so check them if a PSU job is your goal.
- You can appear for one or two papers. The second paper must be from the approved combination list in the brochure (for example, CS with DA, EC, GE, MA, PH, RA, ST or ME). Writing two papers doubles the fee, so do it only if you can prepare both well.
- For papers with choices (XE, XL sections, GG Part B, XH section), choose based on your strengths. GG and XH choices are made in the application form. XE and XL optional sections are chosen during the exam.
Step 4: Know the Marking Scheme and Use It
| Question type | Negative marking | Partial marking |
|---|---|---|
| MCQ | Yes. 1/3 mark for a wrong 1-mark MCQ, 2/3 mark for a wrong 2-mark MCQ | No |
| MSQ | No | No |
| NAT | No | No |
Tricks that follow from the GATE 2027 marking scheme
- Blind guessing in MCQs gives no gain. With four options and 1/3 negative marking, a random guess has an expected value of zero for a 1-mark question (1/4 × 1 − 3/4 × 1/3 = 0). The same holds for 2-mark questions.
- Guess only after eliminating options. If you can remove one option confidently, the expected value turns positive (1/3 × 1 − 2/3 × 1/3 = 1/9 for a 1-mark question).
- Attempt every MSQ and NAT question you can reason about. There is no negative marking for them. Remember that an MSQ gives marks only if you pick exactly the correct combination, so check each option separately.
- For NAT, read the required decimal places. The question tells you how many decimals to give. Round off only at the final step, not in between. Use the on-screen keypad (the keyboard is disabled).
- Do not leave easy 1-mark questions for later. They are the fastest marks in the paper.
Step 5: Build Your 16-Week GATE 2027 Study Plan
This is a suggested plan. Adjust it to your branch and level.
| Weeks | Focus | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| 1 to 2 | Planning and basics | Download the syllabus, split it into Core and Special Topics, list subjects by strong, average and weak. Collect one standard book and one set of notes per subject. Solve 2 to 3 previous year papers just to understand the style |
| 3 to 8 | Core subject study | Cover Core Topics subject by subject. Spend the most time on high-weightage and weak subjects. Solve topic-wise questions after every topic. Revise Engineering Mathematics and General Aptitude alongside, for 1 hour daily |
| 9 to 11 | Complete the syllabus | Finish the remaining topics and the Special Topics. Start making short notes, formula sheets and an error log |
| 12 to 13 | Practice phase | Solve previous year papers by topic and then full papers. Start weekly full-length mock tests in the exam timing |
| 14 to 15 | Mock and revision | Two to three full mock tests per week, with detailed analysis. Revise notes and formula sheets. Re-do questions from the error log |
| 16 | Final revision | Light revision only. Practise with the virtual calculator. Sort out documents, admit card and exam centre travel. Sleep well |
If you have less than 16 weeks left because of college or work, cut the study phase but do not skip mock tests and revision.
Step 6: Subject-wise GATE 2027 Preparation Strategy
General Aptitude (15 marks, in every paper)
- It has 5 questions of 1 mark and 5 questions of 2 marks.
- It is the easiest section to score in, so aim for full marks.
- Practise verbal ability (grammar, vocabulary, comprehension), numerical ability, reasoning and spatial or data interpretation for 30 to 45 minutes a day.
Engineering Mathematics (13 marks in most papers)
- It is common across many papers and scoring if the basics are strong.
- Focus on linear algebra, calculus, differential equations, probability and statistics, and numerical methods as listed in your paper’s syllabus.
- Practise the numerical questions with the virtual calculator.
Core subject (72 to 85 marks)
- Learn concepts first, then solve many problems.
- Give extra time to topics with the most weight in previous year papers.
- Do not ignore Special Topics, but give them less time than Core Topics.
- For papers with sections (XE, XL, XH, AR, GE, GG, RA), study the sections you will choose in depth.
Step 7: Use the Official Resources
The GATE 2027 website provides:
- The syllabus of every paper
- Previous year question papers (2007 to 2026) in the Downloads tab
- Mock examination links and the virtual scientific calculator
Add to this one standard textbook per subject, your college notes and an online test series. Quality matters more than the number of resources. Finish one source fully before adding another.
Step 8: Previous Year Papers and Mock Tests
- Solve previous year papers topic-wise first to learn the question style and weightage, then full papers under timed conditions.
- Take at least 10 to 15 full-length mock tests before the exam.
- After every test, spend as much time on analysis as on the test. Note where you lost marks: concept gap, calculation error, silly mistake or time.
- Keep an error log and revisit it every week.
- Always use the on-screen calculator during practice. Prohibited items in the exam hall include your own calculator.
Step 9: Time Management in the Exam
A suggested approach for the 3-hour paper (adjust to your style):
- First pass (about 100 to 110 minutes): attempt all questions you can solve quickly. Start with General Aptitude and the easy 1-mark questions.
- Second pass (about 50 to 60 minutes): attempt the longer and calculation-heavy 2-mark questions and NATs.
- Final review (about 10 to 15 minutes): recheck marked questions, confirm MSQ option selections and NAT decimal places.
If you are stuck for more than 3 minutes, mark the question and move on. Do not let one question cost you five.
Step 10: Exam Day Rules and Checklist
- Exam dates: 6, 7, 13, 14, 20 and 21 February 2027. Sessions: 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM and 2:30 PM to 5:30 PM.
- Exam city is notified in January 2027. Admit cards are downloaded from GOAPS.
- Carry a colour A4 printout of the admit card and the original photo ID used in your application.
- You can take your seat 40 minutes before the start and log in 20 minutes before. Login is not allowed after 15 minutes from the scheduled start. You cannot leave before the exam ends.
- Mobile phones (even switched off), watches, calculators, wallets, papers, pen or pencil boxes and electronic devices are strictly prohibited.
- Rough work is done on the scribble pad given. Write your name and registration number on it before use. Only one pad at a time, and tearing sheets is prohibited.
- Do not tamper with the computer. Malpractice can lead to cancellation and a ban of up to 3 years.
Tips to Stay Consistent in GATE 2027 Preparation
- Set a daily target and a weekly target, not just a long-term goal.
- Study in focused blocks of 45 to 90 minutes with short breaks.
- Keep at least one hour a day for revision of earlier topics.
- Sleep 7 to 8 hours and exercise lightly. A tired mind makes calculation errors.
- Limit social media. Join a study group only if it keeps you on schedule.
- Avoid comparing your progress with others.
Common GATE 2027 Preparation Mistakes to Avoid
- Using old syllabus notes without checking the revised syllabus
- Collecting too many books and finishing none
- Skipping General Aptitude and Engineering Mathematics
- Ignoring mock test analysis
- Guessing MCQs blindly and losing marks to negative marking
- Rounding off in the middle of NAT calculations
- Starting full mock tests too late
- Leaving revision for the last week
- Believing fake websites or messages. GATE offices never sell question papers or syllabus
How to Aim for a High Score in GATE 2027
Qualifying marks for General category are decided after the exam and always fall between 25 and 40 out of 100. OBC-NCL/EWS get 9/10 of it and SC/ST/PwD get 2/3 of it. But admission to good institutes and PSU shortlisting depend on the GATE score, which is much higher than the qualifying mark. So aim well above the minimum in your paper. See GATE 2027 qualifying marks for the formulas.
