TNPSC Group 2 Selection Process 2026 — Stages & Exam Pattern
The TNPSC Group 2 recruitment process has four stages:
- Common Preliminary Examination (screening stage for both Group II and Group IIA)
- Main Examination — separate for Group II Services and Group IIA Services
- Onscreen and Physical Certificate Verification
- Counselling
| Stage | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Preliminary Examination | Screening test only; marks not counted for final merit |
| Main Examination | Determines final rank (only Paper II marks count) |
| Certificate Verification | Confirms eligibility documents against claims made online |
| Counselling | Final post allotment based on rank and preference |
Stage 1: TNPSC Group 2 Preliminary Examination
The Preliminary Examination is common for both Group II and Group IIA Services and is purely a screening test. Marks scored in the Prelims are not counted towards the final merit list — they are only used to shortlist candidates for the Main Examination.

How Many Candidates Are Shortlisted for Mains?
TNPSC admits candidates to the Main Examination at 10 times the notified vacancies, factoring in the rule of reservation:
- For Group II Services Main Exam, candidates are shortlisted in a 1:10 ratio (post reservation-wise), though the actual number can exceed this if multiple candidates tie at the cut-off marks of their category.
- For Group IIA Services Main Exam, the same 1:10 ratio and tie-breaking rule applies separately.
Since Group II and Group IIA are separate Main Exams, candidates who wish to compete for both must qualify separately in the Prelims-based shortlisting for each.
Stage 2: TNPSC Group 2 Main Examination
The Main Examination is where your final rank is decided. It consists of two papers — Paper I is qualifying in nature, and only Paper II marks are counted for ranking. Group II and Group IIA Services have separate Main Examinations, syllabi, and question patterns.
TNPSC Group 2 (Group II Services) Main Exam Pattern
| Paper | Subject | Standard | Max Marks | Duration | Qualifying Marks | Type |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Paper I | Tamil Eligibility Test | SSLC | 100 | 3 hours | 40 | Descriptive |
| Paper II | General Studies | Degree | 300 | 3 hours | 90 | Descriptive |
TNPSC Group 2 (Group IIA Services) Main Exam Pattern
| Paper | Subject | Standard | Questions | Max Marks | Duration | Qualifying Marks | Mode | Type |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Paper I | Tamil Eligibility Test | SSLC | — | 100 | 3 hours | 40 | — | Descriptive |
| Paper II-A | General Studies | Degree | 150 | 300 | 3 hours | 90 | CBT | Objective |
| Paper II-B | General Intelligence and Reasoning | SSLC | 50 | (included above) | (included above) | (included above) | CBT | Objective |
Paper II answer sheets are evaluated only if the candidate scores the minimum qualifying marks in Paper I. Appearing for both papers is compulsory — skipping either paper disqualifies the candidate from selection, even if they clear the qualifying marks in the paper attempted.
TNPSC Group 2 Ranking Procedure
The merit list is prepared solely on Paper II marks of the Main Examination. In case of a tie:
- The candidate with the higher qualification is ranked above.
- If qualification is also the same, the senior in age is ranked above.
- If age is also the same, the candidate who submitted the application earlier (by application number) is ranked above.
Exemption for Differently Abled Candidates
Differently abled candidates can claim exemption from writing Paper I (Tamil Eligibility Test) by furnishing the required details and a Certificate of Disability at the time of application.
Stage 3: TNPSC Group 2 Certificate Verification
Based on the Main Examination rank list, candidates are shortlisted for Onscreen Certificate Verification, followed by Physical Certificate Verification.
| Stage | General Category Ratio | Reserved Category Ratio |
|---|---|---|
| Onscreen Certificate Verification | 1:3 | 1:2 |
| Physical Certificate Verification & Counselling | 1:3 | 1:1.5 |
- Onscreen Certificate Verification: Shortlisted candidates get 10 calendar days to upload documents supporting every claim made in the online application. Missing this deadline removes the candidate from further selection.
- If documents are found defective, candidates get another 10 calendar days to re-upload the corrected/required documents. Failure results in rejection of the claim.
- Physical Certificate Verification: Shortlisted candidates must produce all original certificates (matching what was uploaded online) in person. If the candidate does not satisfy eligibility at this stage, the online application is rejected and the candidate is not permitted to attend counselling.
Stage 4: TNPSC Group 2 Counselling
Only candidates who clear Physical Certificate Verification are admitted to Counselling, which is the final stage of the selection process.
- Candidates participate in counselling strictly based on their rank.
- The post chosen during counselling cannot be changed under any circumstances afterward.
- Missing the scheduled counselling date/time means the candidate forfeits their chance — no further opportunity is given.
- Candidates already selected for a post in Group II Services are not considered for Group IIA Services posts under the same notification and cannot attend Group IIA counselling.
