What are Domestic Appliances?
Appliances are equipment specially designed to perform tasks in-house. These gimmicks are always attracted by home-makers to move on this busy schedule of life. Home appliances will aid in cleaning, cooking, washing, and many other household activities. The advent of electricity was the breakthrough for the inventions of large-scale appliances and it really changes the old kitchen into a SMART KITCHEN. Now, the robotic era will make human-free domestic work which is not far away. Many countries have robots in assisting elder people, to help them with domestic activities.
Small domestic appliances will be portable or semi-portable machines, generally used on table-tops, counter-tops, or other platforms, in order to complete the household works. It includes microwave ovens, toasters, humidifiers, food processors, and coffeemakers.

Domestic Automation
Home automation called domotics is building automation for a home, called a smart home. A home automation system will observe and/or control home attributes such as lighting, climate, entertainment systems, and also appliances.
The word ‘smart’ in a smart home refers to the system being conscious of the state of its devices, which is accomplished through the information and communication technologies (ICT) protocol and the Internet of Things (IoT).
AI and Domestic Appliances
The domestic robot is a type of service robot, an autonomous robot that is primarily used for household chores. As the movie Robot & Frank (2012) and Android Kunjappan version 5.25(Malayalam 2019) feature a domestic robot, the story of both movies centers on an elderly man and his relationship with a caretaker robot. These may have influenced every viewer and may have thought of an era controlled by humanoids!
While most domestic robots are simplistic, some may be connected to WiFi networks or smart environments and are autonomous to a high degree.
The Indoor robots include:
- Robotic vacuum cleaners and floor-washing robots which clean floors with sweeping and wet mopping function
- Robots for Ironing to dry and iron shirts using hot air.
- Litter robots – self-cleaning litter boxes that filter clumps out into a built-in waste receptacle that can be lined with an ordinary plastic bag.
- Robotic pantries include Rotimatic that makes Rotis, tortillas, puris out of flour in just a few minutes)
Outdoor robots include:
- Robotic lawnmower – is able to mow a lawn by itself after being programmed.
- Pool cleaning robots that clean and keep swimming pools autonomously by scrubbing in-ground pools from the floor to the waterline
- Gutter-cleaning robots – uses brushes and rubber blades to remove debris from rain gutters
- Window cleaning robots – clean outdoor windows, more specifically house windows
Examples for Robots
One of the earliest domestic robots is called HERO, which was sold during the 1980s.
Another ideal domestic robot was called Topo was designed by Androbot Inc. and released in 1983.
Other examples include Ubtech Lynx, Asus Zenbo, Roomba by IRobot, Alfawise Magnetic, Worx Landroid, Dolphin Nautilus, Budgee by 5 Elements Robotics
It is not so far that we just have to wait till the robots finish works for us!
To Conclude
While discussing with the ease of using these electronic home appliances, we can never forget the waste, that is the e-waste generated across the world. Improper disposal of electronic home appliances can become environmentally harmful and poison ecosystems. The demand for smart appliances and easy life involves AI more and more to make better appliances. Appliance recycling will have equal importance along with the inventions. The countries first to set home appliance recycling includes Switzerland, Sweden, the Netherlands, Japan, and Germany. The process of demolishing waste home appliances involves the removal of hazardous components and the destruction of the equipment to recover materials.
So, all these regarding the Inventors of Domestic Appliances. In conclusion, scientific inventions are without doubt beneficial but we should keep in mind the concerns for our ecosystem for the future. Remember the quote, ‘We do not inherit the Earth from our ancestors; we borrow it from our children.’
