German A2 level is the second of the six-level scale laid down in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). It refers to just above beginner. At this level, you will be able to express basic needs and indulge in simple daily conversations. The German A2 exam pattern is similar to that of A1, with some differences in each module.

Understanding the German A2 Level
This level is an achievement as it shows that you have crossed the basic A1 level. You will have covered most frequently used German grammatical patterns and will have gained a vocabulary of about 1,300 words. At A2 level, you will be able to do the following:
- Have simple conversation and talk about your likes and dislikes.
- Describe your background and education.
- Plan a vacation, go shopping or make a hotel reservation.
- Respond to invitations.
- Use vocabulary related to health, describe ailments, and seek medical advice.
- Write simple SMS and email
Overview of German A2 Exam
The German A2 exam assesses the speaking, writing, reading, and listening ability of the examinee. Once you achieve this level, you will be able to comprehend basic spoken German. The A2 exam includes:
- Self introduction
- Talk about character traits of a person
- Subordinate clauses with “dass”, “weil”, ”wenn” and ”da”
- Adjective endings – nominative, accusative and dative case
- Degrees of comparison
- Relative clauses
- Indefinite pronouns
- Regular and irregular verbs
- Modal verbs
- Polite requests
- Active and passive voice
- Give suggestions
- Write SMS and semi formal letter
- Planning something together
German A2 Exam Pattern
The exam is of 85 points and the passing percentage is 60 %., that is 36 points. Let us have a detailed look at the German A2 exam pattern. The four modules in A2 level are:
- Listening (Hören)
- Reading (Lesen)
- Writing (Schreiben)
- Speaking (Sprechen)
Listening
Teil | Number of Questions | Points | Questions |
Teil 1 | 5 | 5 | You listen to five audio dialogues and answer 5 multiple choice questions. Every dialogue will be played twice. |
Teil 2 | 5 | 5 | You are given images and elements. You listen to an audio and match these images to the elements based on the audio. The audio will most probably be a conversation between two people and will be played once. |
Teil 3 | 5 | 5 | This part is almost similar to teil 1, except that instead of text, you will have images as options for the multiple-choice questions. The audio is played only once. |
Teil 4 | 5 | 5 | You listen to an audio which will be an interview or a conversation and answer True or False to the statements given. |
The duration of this module is 30 minutes.

Teil 4 | 5 | 5 | You are given 5 website’s screenshots and 5 requirements from different people. You have to read the website the requirement with the correct website. |
The duration of reading module is 30 minutes.
Writing
The writing module is of 20 points with a duration of 20 minutes.

Teil 1 | 1 | 10 | You have to write an SMS of maximum 30 words. The situation for the SMS as well we three points to be mentioned will be given. You should convey the information through the SMS. |
Teil 2 | 1 | 5 | You will get a topic to write a letter or an email which will most probably be a formal one. The email should be of 6 to 7 sentences of around 40 words. You must also include the points given in the question. |
Speaking
This module is of 25 points. The duration is 15 minutes.

Preparation Strategy for German A2 Exam
- Immerse yourself in the language. This can be done by reading simple texts, watching movies or series, listening to music and conversation etc.
- Apply what you have learnt by repeating the dialogues of a movie or a podcast.
- Practicing helps improve fluency and confidence. Practice with the help of a friend or in front of a mirror.
- Create a study plan and follow it religiously. Give more attention to modules that need improvement.
