University Entrance Qualification
The university evaluates the applications of Indian students based on the framework provided by the Central Office for Foreign Education (Zentralstelle für ausländisches Bildungswesen, ZAB). If the application is considered to be only partially comparable to the German university entrance requirements (usually Abitur), it is possible to apply for participation in an assessment test (Feststellungsprüfung) in a preparatory course (Studienkolleg).
The application for the preparatory course are not submitted to the Studienkolleg directly, but to the university in Baden-Württemberg. Applicants provisionally accepted to the Heidelberg Studienkolleg must pass an entrance test (examination of German language skills). Its result will determine admission to the Studienkolleg. Applications for the desired Studienkolleg course can be submitted through the heiCO online portal during the following application periods:
- May to 30 June for the following winter semester
- November to 15 December for the following summer semester
The Studienkolleg will prepare students for the assessment test. At Heidelberg University, it offers two-semester subject-group-specific courses to prepare for the assessment test.
Requirements for Master’s Degree Programs
Students applying for a Master’s degree program must have successfully completed a first university degree program at a German or international university. The criteria for each Master’s degree program are stipulated in the respective admission regulations and may include prerequisites such as above-average examination grades in the undergraduate degree program or specific professional experience.
Language Skills
Applicants for all degree programs as well as for all German-language Master’s degree programs must have very good German language skills. Proof of the required German language skills must be submitted prior to enrolling in an academic program. Some degree programs may also include language skills in modern and/or old languages as a requirement in their course requirements. These can partially be made up for during the course of studies if applicants do not meet the language requirements or do not have the required level at the time of enrolment.
Applicants can provide any of the following as a proof of language proficiency:
- Deutsches Sprachdiplom der Kultusministerkonferenz (German Language Diploma of the Conference of German Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs), Level 2
- Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang (German language test for the admission to universities (DSH)), Level 2
- Goethe-Zertifikat C2
- Test Deutsch als Fremdsprache (Test German as a Foreign Language), TestDaF, if all test components were passed with minimum the result TDN 4
- Diploma of the “Feststellungsprüfung” (assessment test to determine the eligibility of foreign applicants for studies at institutions of higher education in Germany)
- Österreichisches Sprachdiplom ÖSD C2
- Gemischtsprachiges Internationales Baccaulaureate (GIB) at schools in foreign countries with German lessons
- telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule certificate
- Language Certificate or proof of German in a foreign school-leaving certificate which – in accordance with bilateral agreements – is recognized as sufficient proof of language proficiency for admission to higher education (attached to the current valid framework of the Kultusministerkonferen (KMK))

How Much Does it Cost to Study for Indian Students at Heidelberg University?
Indian students with a foreign university entrance qualification will be required to pay a tuition fee of EUR 1500 (Rs.134000) per semester for Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programs at Heidelberg University. Apart from this, a special fee of 151.05 euros is charged at the beginning of each semester upon re-registration. The constituents of the special fee are as follows;
