Step 1: Understand the Syllabus First
Kerala PSC issues a different syllabus for each department, so make sure you follow the Draftsman Grade II Civil / Overseer Grade II Civil syllabus. It has six subjects.
| No. | Subject | Study priority |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Basic Engineering Drawing | Medium |
| 2 | Surveying | High |
| 3 | Building Materials and Construction | High |
| 4 | Building Drawing and Estimating | High |
| 5 | Hydraulics and Irrigation | Medium |
| 6 | AutoCAD | Medium |
PSC doesn’t publish a marks split in this syllabus. Treat the priority column as a guide to where you should spend more time, not as official weightage.
What to do: Download the syllabus PDF from the Entri LSGD Draftsman Grade 2 syllabus article, print it and tick off each topic as you finish it.
Step 2: Make a Realistic Study Plan
A plan works only if you can follow it every day.
- Count your days. Work backwards from the exam date and divide the time among the six subjects.
- Give more time to high-priority subjects. Surveying, Building Materials and Construction, and Building Drawing and Estimating should get the largest share.
- Fix daily slots. Two focused sessions of 2 to 3 hours beat one long, tiring day.
- Plan a weekly review. Keep one session a week to revise what you covered.
- Leave buffer days. Some days will go wrong, so leave room for them.
Step 3: Subject-Wise LSGD Draftsman Grade 2 Preparation Tips
Basic Engineering Drawing
- Practise on paper with proper instruments. Questions test how well you know the method.
- Learn the standard conventions for lettering, dimensioning and scales.
- Revise the construction of conic sections (ellipse, parabola, hyperbola) and the basics of projection.
Surveying
- Revise the basics of chain, compass, plane table and levelling surveys first.
- Practise reduction of levels with both the height of instrument method and the rise and fall method.
- Learn contouring, its characteristics and uses.
- Don’t skip theodolite survey and the modern and advanced surveying instruments. Theory questions here are easy marks if you’ve read them once.
Building Materials and Construction
- Make a table for each material (stone, brick, tiles, cement, lime, timber, concrete) with its properties, tests and uses.
- Learn the difference between plain cement concrete and reinforced cement concrete.
- For foundation, masonry, roofing and flooring, learn the types, parts and sequence of work.
- Cover building finishes, services and temporary structural treatment (such as shoring and scaffolding).
Building Drawing and Estimating
- Read the building rules and byelaws in short sections and make a one-page summary of key provisions.
- Learn the standard methods of estimation and the rules of measurement for common items of work.
- Practise rate analysis and valuation problems every week. Speed here comes only from practice.
Hydraulics and Irrigation
- Start with irrigation terms and definitions, since they make up a good share of the theory questions.
- Understand storage and diversion head works, reservoirs, dams, canals and cross drainage works, and keep labelled sketches for revision.
- Memorise the key formulas for fluid properties and pressure measurement, and learn the types of hydraulic energy.
AutoCAD
- Practise the commands on the software daily instead of just reading them.
- Make a command list with the full name, shortcut and function of each one.
- Learn the drawing toolbar, the modify toolbar, and the plotting and printing settings.
Step 4: Use Previous Question Papers
Previous question papers show you how PSC asks questions and which topics repeat.
- Solve papers from Draftsman, Overseer and related technical posts first.
- Keep an error log: write the question, your wrong answer, the correct answer and the reason.
- Mark topics that keep coming up, and revise them more often.
- Solve papers under a timer after you finish a few subjects, not only at the end.
Step 5: Practise Regularly on the Entri App
Daily practice turns knowledge into marks. On the Entri app you can:
- Take topic-wise quizzes right after finishing a subject
- Attempt full-length mock tests with 100 questions in 90 minutes
- Review your answers and find your weak areas
- Track your improvement from one mock test to the next
Make it a habit to take at least one quiz every day and one full mock test every week.
Step 6: Master the Mock Test Strategy
Mock tests are where you learn to handle the exam itself.
- Take them in exam conditions. Use a timer, avoid breaks and don’t search for answers.
- Follow a question order. Attempt your strongest subjects first to build confidence and save time.
- Watch the negative marking. Each wrong answer costs 1/3 mark, so skip questions you can’t narrow down to two options.
- Review every mock thoroughly. Spend as much time analysing it as you did taking it.
- Work on speed. You have about 54 seconds per question, so practise calculations until they feel quick.
Step 7: Last-Month Revision Plan
| Week | Focus |
|---|---|
| Week 1 | Revise High-priority subjects: Surveying, Building Materials and Construction, Estimating |
| Week 2 | Revise Drawing, Hydraulics and Irrigation, and AutoCAD |
| Week 3 | Take full mock tests and fix weak areas from your error log |
| Week 4 | Light revision of short notes, formulas and rules; one or two final mocks |
In the last few days
- Don’t start new topics.
- Revise your short notes, formula sheets and error log.
- Check your hall ticket, exam centre and travel plan.
- Sleep well the night before.
