The Occupational English Test (OET) is an international English language proficiency test. It is designed specifically for healthcare professionals who wish to work or study in English-speaking countries. The test assesses the language skills of candidates in a healthcare context. It focuses on real-life scenarios that healthcare professionals commonly encounter in their work. The test is available for 12 different healthcare professions. Which includes doctors, nurses, dentists, pharmacists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, radiographers, and more. In this article we will provide you with some tips to improve OET Speaking Score.

OET Speaking Test

The OET Speaking sub-test is designed to assess the English language communication skills of healthcare professionals in a healthcare context. It evaluates the ability to interact effectively and appropriately with patients, colleagues, and other healthcare professionals, using language that is relevant to the candidate’s specific healthcare profession.

The OET Speaking test Consists of two parts:

Part A: Consultation Role-play

In this part, candidates will engage in a role-play scenario where they take on the role of a healthcare professional. The interlocutor (the test administrator) assumes the role of a patient or a patient’s relative. The candidate’s task is to effectively communicate with the patient, gather information, provide appropriate advice, and demonstrate the ability to handle the given situation professionally.

The role-play scenarios are specific to the candidate’s profession. For example, doctors may have scenarios related to diagnosing a patient’s condition and discussing treatment options, while nurses may encounter situations involving patient care and providing instructions for recovery.

Part B: Presentation Role-play

In Part B, candidates are required to give a short talk or presentation on a healthcare-related topic. The interlocutor takes on the role of a listener who is interested in the topic but may not be a healthcare professional. Candidates are given a card with the topic and some points to consider. They have a few minutes to prepare before delivering their talk.

The Speaking test is conducted one-on-one with a certified OET interlocutor, ensuring a personalized and relevant assessment of the candidate’s language skills in a healthcare context.

The Speaking sub-test aims to assess the candidate’s ability to:

  • Use appropriate language and communication strategies with patients, colleagues, and other healthcare professionals.
  • Demonstrate clear and effective communication during consultations and presentations.
  • Show empathy and understanding in interactions with patients.
  • Present information logically and coherently during the role-play scenarios.

The OET Speaking sub-test, along with the other sub-tests,  provides a comprehensive evaluation of the candidates English language proficiency. Making it a valuable tool for registration, employment, and academic purposes in English-speaking healthcare environments.

Scoring well in the OET Speaking sub-test requires strong language skills, effective communication, and familiarity with the test format. Here are some useful tips to help you excel in the OET Speaking sub-test:

Understand the Role-plays:

Familiarize yourself with the types of role-play scenarios that may appear in your specific profession. Understand the roles of both the healthcare professional and the patient. Practice various scenarios to become comfortable with different situations.

Active Listening:

During the role-play, listen carefully to the patient’s concerns and questions. Show empathy and understanding in your responses. This will demonstrate your ability to communicate effectively with patients in a healthcare context.

Use Clear and Concise Language:

Speak clearly and coherently, avoiding excessive jargon or technical terms that may confuse the patient. Use simple language that the patient can understand, while still conveying the necessary medical information.

Manage Time Wisely:

In Part A of the Speaking sub-test, you have limited time to gather information and provide advice. Practice managing your time effectively to address all relevant points within the allotted time frame.

Stay Calm and Confident:

Nervousness can affect your performance. Take deep breaths, remain composed, and stay confident during the role-play. Focus on your communication skills and trust in your language abilities.

Pronunciation and Intonation:

Work on improving your pronunciation and intonation. Speak at a steady pace and enunciate clearly to ensure your message is understood.

Engage in Mock Role-plays:

Practice with a study partner or teacher who can act as the patient or interlocutor. Conduct mock role-plays to simulate the test environment and gain valuable feedback.

Address the Patient’s Concerns:

During the role-play, ensure you address the patient’s main concerns and respond appropriately to their questions. This will show that you can effectively communicate with patients and provide the necessary information.

Practice Active Role-playing:

How is OET Speaking Sub-test Assessed?

The OET Speaking sub-test is assessed by trained and certified OET assessors who follow standardized guidelines to evaluate candidates’ language proficiency and communication skills. The Speaking sub-test consists of two parts: Part A (Consultation Role-play) and Part B (Presentation Role-play).

Part A – Consultation Role-play:

During Part A, candidates will engage in a role-play scenario where they assume the role of a healthcare professional, while the interlocutor (the test administrator) takes on the role of a patient or a patient’s relative. The candidate’s performance is evaluated based on the following criteria:

Intelligibility: The assessor assesses how clearly and understandably the candidate communicates in English.

Fluency: The candidate’s ability to speak smoothly and with appropriate pacing is evaluated.

Appropriateness of Language: The assessors determine if the candidate uses language suitable for a healthcare setting and if they effectively communicate medical information to the patient.

Interactive Listening: The candidate’s ability to actively listen to the patient’s concerns, questions, and responses is assessed.

Relationship Building: Assessors evaluate the candidate’s ability to establish rapport and show empathy during the interaction with the patient.

Part B – Presentation Role-play:

In Part B, candidates are required to give a short talk or presentation on a healthcare-related topic. The interlocutor takes on the role of a listener who is interested in the topic but may not be a healthcare professional. The candidate is evaluated based on the following criteria:

Content: The assessors evaluate the relevance, clarity, and coherence of the candidate’s presentation.

Language: The candidate’s use of accurate and appropriate language to convey the topic effectively is assessed.

Intelligibility and Fluency: As with Part A, the candidate’s pronunciation, fluency, and clarity of speech are evaluated.

Understanding and Development: Assessors determine the candidate’s ability to develop the topic and provide coherent information.

Assessors use a detailed and standardized scoring rubric to evaluate candidates’ performance in both parts. Each criterion is assigned a score, and the final score is based on the overall performance in the sub-test.

It’s important to note that OET assessors undergo rigorous training and calibration to ensure consistent and fair assessment across all candidates. The Speaking sub-test aims to assess candidates’ English language proficiency in a healthcare context and their ability to communicate effectively with patients and colleagues.

Conclusion

Improving your OET Speaking score is achievable through focused effort and a strategic approach. The OET Speaking sub-test assesses your ability to communicate effectively in a healthcare context, so it’s essential to develop strong language skills and apply them appropriately.
