The Indian Coast Guard which is generally known as ICG is a maritime law enforcement and search and rescue agency of India. The jurisdiction lies over its territorial waters including its contiguous zone and exclusive economic zone. The Indian Coast Guard was initially established on 1 February 1977 by the Coast Guard Act, 1978 which was declared by the Parliament of India. The Indian Coast Guard is functional under the supervision of  the Ministry of Defense. The Coast Guard works in close cooperation with the Indian Navy, the Department of Fisheries, the Department of Revenue (Customs) and the Central and State police forces.

The 1st of February of this year, 2022 will be the 46th year of celebrating the Indian Coast Guard Day. Recent developments in the IGC is remarkable. The Indian Coast Guard has fully grown as a powerful organization within a total of 156 ships and 62 aircraft . It is said that in the upcoming year of 2025, the force level targets in a total of 200 surface platforms which they will be going to complete. The day of Indian Coast Guard Day observes with a specific theme which about this year is not declared till. But this day celebrates the commemoration of the Indian Coast Guard establishment and its benefits to our nations and other forces to make a strong impact and continue maintaining the shield to protect our country from any outside forces along with other domestic absurdities.

  •  In the 1960s, sea-borne smuggling of goods was a major disaster to India’s domestic economy.
  • The Indian Customs Department often called upon the Indian Navy for help with patrol and interception in the anti-smuggling effort.
  • The Nagchaudhuri Committee was formed  with participation from the Indian Navy and the Indian Air Force
  • The purpose of the union was to study the problem.
  • In August 1971, the committee recognized the need to patrol India’s vast coastline, set up a registry of offshore fishing vessels in order to identify illegal activity, and establish a capable and well-equipped force to intercept vessels engaged in illegal activities.
  • The committee also looked at the number and nature of the equipment, infrastructure and personnel required to provide those services.
