Since 1967, on Hans Christian Andersen’s birthday, 2 April, International Children’s Book Day (ICBD) is celebrated to stimulate a passion of reading and to call attraction to children’s books. International Children’s Book Day is planned to boost love for reading in the youth and punctuate the importance of books.
Each year an assorted National Section of IBBY has the chance to be the multinational sponsor of ICBD. It determines a theme and invites a spectacular author from the host country to compose a message to the children and teens of the world and a well-known illustrator to arrange a poster. These materials are used in various ways to support books and reading. Numerous IBBY Sections encourage ICBD through the media and handle activities in schools and public libraries. Often ICBD is joined to festivals around children’s books and other specific events that may consider encounters with illustrators and authors, writing competitions or hand out book awards.

Who is Hans Christian Andersen?
Born in 1805 on 2nd April, near Copenhagen, Denmark in Odense—perished in 1875 on 4th August in Copenhagen. He was the Danish master of the literary fairy tale whose stories achieved mass popularity was wide known as Hans Christian Andersen . He is also the author of poems, plays, novels, several autobiographies and travel books . Before, numerous of those works are nearly unheard-of outside Denmark. Now, his fairy tales and children’s books and play are amongst the ones that were frequently translated works in all of literary history.Andersen’s first book of tales, Every, fortnight for born (1835; “Tales, Told for Children”), included stories such as“The Princess and the Pea,” and “Little Ida’s Flowers.” , “The Tinderbox,” and “Little Claus and Big Claus,”
Hans was born to broke guardians and had to fight the intolerant class structure of his time throughout his existence. The first important help came from Jonas Collin, one of the directors of the Royal Theater in Copenhagen, to whom Andersen had gone as a young man in the vain expectation of winning reputation as an actor. Jonas lifted the money required to admit him to school. Although school was a miserable experience for Andersen because of an bitter headmaster, it allowed him to be admitted to the University of Copenhagen in 1828.
