International Women’s Day History 2022
The starting point of this celebration is still an unresolved mystery, with various accounts from different continents. According to historians from Europe, the Women’s day celebrations was started back in 1911 in the Nordic countries. In 1911 March 19, International Women’s Day was organized for the first time in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland. Between 1913 and 1914, women in Russia observed their first Women’s Day on February 23. Later, it was decided that March 8 can the globally accepted day to celebrate this auspicious day.
Various accounts point to another interesting story behind the origin of this day. The IWD’s roots lie in the 1900’s labour movements. It was first organised in 1911 by the early 20th century, by Clara Zetkin from Germany who is considered as one of the early Marxist. She was a trained teacher and was also associated with the Social Democratic Party (SPD). She was a part of both the labour movement and the women’s movement. In the 1880s, when anti-socialist laws were enforced, Zetkin went into self-exile in Switzerland and France. During this time, she wrote and distributed proscribed literature, and met leading socialists of the time. She also played a significant role in the formation of the Socialist International.
She became the editor of Die Gleichheit (‘Equality’), SPD’s newspaper for women. During this course, she founded the International Socialist Women’s Congress. In 1910 three years after this Zetkin proposed at a conference that Women’s Day be celebrated in every country on February 28. With over 100 women participants from 17 countries along with members of various Unions, working women’s clubs and female legislators, and socialist party members the event was successful. On the unanimous approval of the congress, Women’s Day was observed for the first time in 1911. Two years later, in 1913, the date was changed to March 8, and it continues to be celebrated like that from then onwards.
