Before the train leaves (pre-departure)

• Sign on and briefing. Report to the crew booking point, complete the required checks (such as breath analyser testing as per railway rules) and take the duty briefing.
• Collect documents and equipment. Take the required manuals, log books, caution orders, safety items and tools.
• Read the loco log book. Check reported defects and confirm they were rectified.
• Inspect the locomotive. Check brakes, air pressure, compressor, oil and fuel levels, coolant and sand as applicable, pantograph and electrical equipment on electric locos, lights, horns, wipers, couplings and safety devices.
