PART I: GENERAL KNOWLEDGE (50 Marks)
1. History (5 Marks)

Kerala history
- Battle of Colachel (1741): Marthanda Varma’s Travancore defeated the Dutch.
- Kundara Proclamation (1809): associated with Velu Thampi Dalawa.
- Pazhassi Raja: led resistance against the British in Malabar.
- Malabar Rebellion: 1921.
- Vaikom Satyagraha: 1924. Guruvayur Satyagraha: 1931. Temple Entry Proclamation: 1936.
- SNDP Yogam: 1903, under Sree Narayana Guru.
- Kerala formed: 1 November 1956. First ministry: E.M.S. Namboodiripad, 1957.

2. Geography (5 Marks)
- Earth’s layers: crust, mantle, core. Atmosphere: troposphere, stratosphere, mesosphere, thermosphere, exosphere. Weather occurs in the troposphere.
- Rocks: igneous, sedimentary, metamorphic.
- Earth movements: rotation takes about 24 hours and causes day and night. Revolution takes about 365¼ days and, with the tilt of the axis, causes seasons.
- Pressure and winds, temperature and seasons, and global issues such as climate change are all in the syllabus.
- Kerala: 14 districts; Periyar is the longest river (244 km); Anamudi is the highest peak (2,695 m); Vembanad is the largest lake; Palakkad is the largest district by area.
3. Economics (5 Marks)
- RBI: established 1935, the central bank of India.
- NITI Aayog replaced the Planning Commission in 2015.
- GST was introduced in 2017.
- Core concepts: GDP, inflation, budget, banking, taxes (direct and indirect).
- Kerala: Kudumbashree (1998) is the state’s poverty eradication and women empowerment mission. MGNREGA was enacted in 2005.
4. Indian Constitution (5 Marks)
- Adopted 26 November 1949; came into force 26 January 1950.
- Fundamental Rights: Articles 12–35. Fundamental Duties: Article 51A. DPSP: Part IV.
- Parliament: Lok Sabha (maximum 550 as per Constitution; currently 543 elected) and Rajya Sabha (maximum 250).
- Election Commission: Article 324. CAG: Article 148. Governor: Article 153.
- 42nd Amendment (1976): added “Socialist”, “Secular” and “Integrity” to the Preamble.
- 73rd and 74th Amendments (1992): gave constitutional status to Panchayats and Municipalities.
- Article 21A: Right to Education.
5. Kerala: Governance & Administration (5 Marks)
This is the most job-relevant topic for a VFA.
- Local self-government: Kerala Panchayati Raj Act, 1994. Three tiers are Grama, Block and District Panchayats, plus Municipalities and Corporations.
- Kerala Legislative Assembly: 140 elected members.
- Revenue administration (ascending order): Village Office → Taluk (Tahsildar) → Revenue Division (RDO) → District (Collector) → Land Revenue Commissioner. Revise this chain thoroughly.
- Land reforms: the Kerala Land Reforms Act, 1963, which came into force on 1 January 1970.
- Right to Service Act: Kerala, 2012.
- State symbols: animal, Indian elephant; bird, great hornbill; tree, coconut; flower, Kanikonna; festival, Onam.
6. Biology & Public Health (6 Marks)

Communicable diseases and causes
- Bacterial: tuberculosis, cholera, typhoid, tetanus.
- Viral: dengue, chikungunya, hepatitis, rabies, Nipah.
- Protozoan: malaria.
- Vectors: Aedes mosquito spreads dengue and chikungunya; Anopheles spreads malaria.
- Leptospirosis (rat fever) is common in Kerala during monsoon and is a frequent question.
- Blood groups: discovered by Karl Landsteiner. O negative is the universal donor and AB positive the universal recipient.
- Human body: 206 bones in an adult, skin is the largest organ, liver is the largest gland.
7. Physics (3 Marks)
- Archimedes’ principle: a body in a fluid feels an upward buoyant force equal to the weight of fluid displaced.
- Pascal’s law: pressure applied to a confined fluid is transmitted equally in all directions (hydraulic lift, brakes).
- Density = mass ÷ volume. Water’s density is 1000 kg/m³ and it is maximum at 4°C.
- Relative density = density of substance ÷ density of water.
- Adhesion and cohesion; capillary rise in narrow tubes.
- Electromagnetic spectrum (increasing frequency): radio waves, microwaves, infrared, visible light, ultraviolet, X-rays, gamma rays.
- Photoelectric effect: explained by Einstein, who won the 1921 Nobel Prize for it.
8. Chemistry (3 Marks)
- Atomic structure, the periodic table, acids, bases and the pH scale (below 7 acidic, 7 neutral, above 7 basic).
- Common names:
- Baking soda: NaHCO₃
- Washing soda: Na₂CO₃·10H₂O
- Common salt: NaCl
- Quicklime: CaO
- Slaked lime: Ca(OH)₂
9. Arts, Culture, Literature & Society (5 Marks)
- Performing arts: Kathakali, Mohiniyattam, Koodiyattam (recognised by UNESCO in 2008), Theyyam and Ottamthullal (Kunchan Nambiar).
- Institutions: Kerala Kalamandalam, Cheruthuruthy (founded 1930 under Vallathol’s leadership).
- Literature: G. Sankara Kurup was the first Jnanpith winner (1965, Odakkuzhal). Other winners: S.K. Pottekkatt, Thakazhi, M.T. Vasudevan Nair, O.N.V. Kurup, Akkitham.
- Festivals and events: Onam, Vishu, Thrissur Pooram, and the Nehru Trophy Boat Race at Punnamada Lake.
10. Computer Fundamentals (3 Marks)
- Networks: LAN (local area), MAN (metropolitan), WAN (wide area).
- Network devices: hub, switch, router, bridge, gateway, and their uses.
- Basics: CPU, RAM, input/output devices, operating system, email and internet.
- Cyber awareness: types of cyber crimes at awareness level, phishing, and the IT Act, 2000 (amended in 2008).
11. Important Laws (5 Marks)
- New criminal laws (in force since 1 July 2024): Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA). They replace the IPC, CrPC and Evidence Act respectively.

PART II: APPLIED / VOCATIONAL SUBJECTS (20 Marks)
This is a high-weight part, so don’t skip it. Download the topic list for this part from the official Kerala PSC syllabus for Cat. No. 571/2025 and prepare strictly from it. Since the VFA works under the Revenue Department, give extra attention to revenue and village administration topics, land-related terms and basic government office procedure. PART III: ARITHMETIC, MENTAL ABILITY & OBSERVATION SKILLS (10 Marks)

Mental Ability
- Analogy: Doctor : Hospital :: Teacher : School.
- Odd one out: Rose, Lily, Jasmine, Mango → Mango (not a flower).
- Number series: 3, 6, 12, 24, ? → 48 (each term doubles).
- Coding-decoding: if MANGO is coded NBOHP (+1 each letter), APPLE is BQQMF.
- Family relations: “A is B’s brother, and B is C’s mother. How is A related to C?” → Maternal uncle.
Observation Skills
Practise figure counting, finding the odd figure, mirror and water images, and spotting differences between pictures. Speed comes only from practice, so use timed mocks.
PART IV: GENERAL ENGLISH (10 Marks)
- Grammar: articles, prepositions, tenses, subject-verb agreement, active and passive voice, direct and indirect speech, and question tags.
- Common errors: “Each of the boys is present.” Use an before vowel sounds (“an hour”), a before consonant sounds (“a university”).
- Prepositions: interested in, good at, afraid of, married to.
- One-word substitutes: bibliophile (book lover), ornithology (study of birds), democracy (government by the people).
- Idioms: a blessing in disguise, break the ice, once in a blue moon.
- Also revise synonyms, antonyms and spelling.
PART V: LANGUAGE SKILLS: MALAYALAM / KANNADA / TAMIL (10 Marks)
Choose and prepare the language you opted for. For Malayalam, focus on:
- സന്ധി (sandhi): types are ആഗമം, ആദേശം, ലോപം and ദ്വിത്വം. Examples: തിരു + അടി = തിരുവടി (ആഗമം); നൽ + മൊഴി = നന്മൊഴി (ആദേശം).
- സമാസം (compounds), പര്യായപദങ്ങൾ (synonyms), വിപരീതപദങ്ങൾ (antonyms), ഒറ്റപ്പദം (one-word substitutes), ശൈലികൾ (idioms), പഴഞ്ചൊല്ലുകൾ (proverbs), ശുദ്ധരൂപം (correct forms) and comprehension-based questions.
- Example: the synonyms of സൂര്യൻ include ഭാനു, ആദിത്യൻ and രവി. The antonym of ഉദയം is അസ്തമയം.
