Learning mathematics is essential for understanding a variety of subjects, including physics, music, social studies, and even the arts. The study of mathematics aids in improving problem-solving abilities and promotes discipline and logical thought in people. To promote the importance and spread awareness about the importance of mathematics, The government of India celebrates National Mathematics day on 22 December every year. The day honors and marks the birth anniversary of legendary Indian mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan. Check the significance and importance of National Mathematics Day 2022 below.

National Mathematics Day 2022 Theme

National Mathematics Day is celebrated on 22 December annually to mark the birth anniversary of legendary Indian mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan. The celebrations aim at spreading awareness about the importance of mathematics and honor the contributions made by Srinivasa Ramanujan, in the field of mathematics.

When is National Mathematics Day 2022?

The Indian government declared December 22, to be National Mathematics Day (NMD) in 2012. The day is celebrated to mark the birth anniversary of the legendary Indian mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan. This year, the Indian government will commemorate National Mathematics Day on December 22, 2022 (a Thursday).

What is National Mathematics Day 2022?

Mathematics Day, on December 22, celebrates the birth anniversary of India’s legendary mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan who greatly contributed to mathematical analysis, number theory, infinite series, and continued fractions. The celebrations aim at spreading awareness about the importance of mathematics and the contributions made by Srinivasa Ramanujan, in the field of mathematics. Here, we celebrate the 135th birth anniversary of Dr. Ramanujan 0n 22 December 2022. The first International Day of Mathematics was marked in March 2020.

History of National Mathematics Day 2022

At a memorial ceremony in Chennai to commemorate the great mathematician Srinivasa Iyengar Ramanujan’s birth anniversary in 2012, the former prime minister of India, Dr. Manmohan Singh, paid tribute to Srinivasa Ramanujan. In honor, National Mathematics Day was declared to be celebrated on December 22.

Who is Srinivasa Ramanujan?

Srinivasa RamanujanSrinivasa Ramanujan, (born December 22, 1887, Erode, India—died April 26, 1920, Kumbakonam), Indian mathematician whose contributions to the theory of numbers include pioneering discoveries of the properties of the partition function. Ramanujan initially developed his own mathematical research in isolation. According to Hans Eysenck: “He tried to interest the leading professional mathematicians in his work, but failed for the most part. What he had to show them was too novel, too unfamiliar, and additionally presented in unusual ways; they could not be bothered.”

During his short life, Ramanujan independently compiled nearly 3,900 results (mostly identities and equations. He acquired a copy of George Shoobridge Carr’s Synopsis of Elementary Results in Pure and Applied Mathematics, 2 vol. when he was 15 years old (1880–86). His intellect was awakened by this collection of tens of thousands of theorems, many of which had the most flimsy justifications and used nothing newer than 1860. After confirming the findings in Carr’s book, Ramanujan went further, creating his theorems and concepts. Ramanujan received a scholarship at the University of Madras in 1903, but he gave up his scholarship the following year because he focused solely on mathematics. In 1911 Ramanujan published the first of his papers in the Journal of the Indian Mathematical Society. Later, his intelligence helped him to start corresponding with the British mathematician Godfrey H. Hardy in 1913, which led to a special scholarship from the University of Madras and a grant from Trinity College, Cambridge.

In the years that followed, he worked on the Riemann series, elliptic integrals, hypergeometric series, functional equations of the zeta function, and his theory of divergent series. In this theory, he discovered a method for calculating the sum of divergent series which was later known as Ramanujan summation. In England, Ramanujan made more progress, particularly in the division of numbers (the variety of ways a positive integer may be stated as the sum of other positive integers; for example, 4 can be expressed as 4, 3 + 1, 2 + 2, 2 + 1 + 1, and 1 + 1 + 1 + 1). In 1918, he was elected to the Royal Society of London after his papers appeared in English and European periodicals. Ramanujan developed tuberculosis in 1917, but his health recovered enough for him to go back to India in 1919. Ramanujan died 0n 26 April 1920.

Significance of National Mathematics Day 2022

The primary objective of the celebration is to increase public awareness of the value of mathematics in the advancement of humanity. On this day, the team organize camps to provide training for math instructors and students, with a focus on the creation, production, and distribution of teaching-learning materials (TLM) for math and research in related fields.
