An environment is a place where different things like living (biotic) or non-living (abiotic) things are co-existing. Living things live in their environment and interact with it and adapt themselves to suit that particular environment. Plants, animals, human beings, air, soil all make our environment. We are constantly interacting with other factors and adapting our lifestyles as our environment changes. Every year in June we spend 24 hours to cater to this environment, known by the World Environment Day. We are supposed to protect our environment throughout our life but knowingly or unknowingly we are forgetting that part with so much easiness. Every year with a theme and a host country UN is aiming to reach each and every person to spread the awareness. Pakistan was supposed to host the 2023 celebrations.

World Environment Day 2023
The pollution news is striking our daily logs for the last few years. Most of the metropolitan cities in the world are so polluted that air refreshers and masks became the daily routine for those citizens. Even oxygens are out in the markets. People are paying to breathe pure air. Night sky with stars and fresh air and water became a dream for so many. We exploited the earth so much that it’s paying us back with erosion, hurricanes, landslides, heatwaves, and all other natural disasters. The number of hurricanes, heavy landslides, floods, etc has increased so much in the last couple of years. Millions are losing their habitats. Not just humans even animals are losing their natural habitat leading to their extinction. All these are leading to an ecological unbalance which will like a cycle haunts us with different names, like climate change, sea-level rise, water scarcity, etc.
With rapid urbanization, and deforestation earth was choking. The icebergs are melting, and the temperature was on a rise for the last couple of years. Even though this pandemic causes heavy destruction to mankind, it soothes the earth to an extent. Clear skies and breathable air was back in most parts of the world. When we destroy the biodiversity it revenges on us by handing over zoonotic disease. Zoonotic diseases are 75% of all infectious diseases in the world, including the Covid-19. Zoonotic diseases are transmitted to people by animals. To highlight that the protection and health of the environment is a major issue, which affects the well-being of peoples and economic development throughout the globe, the UN celebrates World Environment Day.
History of Environment Day 2023
From 1972 onwards, UN celebrates June 05 as the World Environment Day to spread awareness of environment protection among its member nations. The United Nations Conference on the Human Environment, also known as the Stockholm Conference was from June 5– 16 in 1972. It was first of its kind initiative by the UN for the environment protection. The first environment day was celebrated in 1974 after two years to the proclamation. Today more than 100 countries celebrate, and works together to protect our mother earth for a better tomorrow. Environment Protection is even now a major part of our Sustainable goals. Wold Environmental Day Date 2023: June 05
UN argues the governments around the world to create policies for protection and enhancement of our environment. Unfortunately, most of us are forgetting about environment protection until we personally face any sort of disaster. Its time to wake up from this ignorant sleep, its time to do something. even planting a sapling will help the earth to soothe herself. If you look around the afforestation is one of the major cause of landslides. Plant trees, avoid unnecessary use of plastics, fossil fuel vehicles, you can contribute towards the environment protection. Switch to glass bottles, electric vehicles, paper bags, etc to help our environment to heal.
Don’t throw the garbages into the water resources, these plastics are choking our animal kingdoms. The number of fishes and turtles dying because of the plastic container are at an alarming rate. Our beaches are losing their charms to garbage piles. It’s our time for action, switch to eco-friendly items, plant a tree, protect the animals. Our biodiversity is in nature, if we wait too long we may lose our habitat forever. Its time for action, act now or lose forever.
